[up][up]They had to pad out the episode somehow. It's not like they could do half an episode of Haru/Rin pillow-talk.

EDIT: Oh great, make my post the page topper.

I suppose. But they could have done better with the whole Haru gets over his issues instead of it happening thanks to magical hallucinations.

Every accusation by the GOP is ALWAYS a confession.

[up] It was kinda dumb conflict in the first place. Magic hallucinations is a good a reason as any.

The whole Haru think was kinda dumb, so glad that's over.

I loved the English from Rin's old homestay parents! Who were the actors?

Rin's English was adorable.

[up] I got an incredible case of the giggles when listening to them because ZOMG! they actually got Australians... or people who can fake it really well (which suggests Poms or Kiwis). Except for the member of the "National Team" who sounded more "What Americans Think Australians Sound Like but to actual Australians sounds closer to Cockney British". (And the Australian national team... they jest. For the big events Australian routinely sends about a couple of dozen each for both the men's and women's teams).

They are VERY good at speaking English in Australian accents... but their pacing sounds stilted, as if they wanted to take their time with every word, or as if they were dubbing it to set animation (which may be the case). I still have no idea if the actors were Japanese or Australian. In rare moments, they would pronounce some words oddly.

One tumbln'er made the theory that the parents are talking slowly so the Japanese can understand them better. Which I think makes sense.

[up]That makes the most sense. Though I'm still surprised at no subtitles considering half the episode was in English, possibly more. "You'd better be studying your English hard, kids!"

I actually meant Japanese subtitles. Although...yeah, I guess Funi would take those away for the English sub even if they were present in the Japanese airings.

My guess would be they had someone with an Australian accent say the lines and then the Japanese VA's spoke them. That's what it sounded like to me at least.

  • Amazing English is amazing. Except for that one time in Rin's childhood. Why so creepy?surprised
  • Now, now, Rin. Sharing a bed isn't that bad.tongue
  • Yay, Haru found his way. Or should I say, he has been stabilized. We all know swimming's his lifeblood. There was no way he could just break up with his first love!tongue

Episode 13! Finale!

- "I'm going to start caring about times and winning for the sake of my dream." Yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes!!!

- Whoa, what a thoughtful souvenir!

- Makoto will be a great coach.

- Nagisa just tried to order everything on the menu.

- Found something? Like a thylacine?

- Somebodys are a little emotional.

- Makoto stop swimming with make-believe dolphins. This is a competition.

- Pretty swimming scenes, even if they don't make sense.

- The one thing I'm disappointed in this season? No Rin x Nitori moments. Also too much drama that was waaaaay over-exaggerated and not enough comedy.

- I don't even know what was going on in that ending. Like had they moved and they were visiting Iwatobi? Before they even unpacked at their new locations? What? But everyone really loves swimming in early April.

Loves feel-good animation a whole lot.

From what I've heard Japan doesn't like Nitori.

Though they'll probably have some in the drama cds.

Haru learned his lesson. He's in a sports anime. Kinda depressing really. I wish he could have found a way to move forward staying the way he was, rather than becoming like every other sports character ever. FAIL

WTF do they put in that water? Trippy.

Generally, this should should just stuck with the comedy and ignored the drama as it mostly didn't work very well. In particular, trying to do drama with the guy who's whole thing is having the emotional range of a toaster was kinda dumb.

Nice to see a new ending, even if the old one was better.

We got information from one replier to an anime blog:

The English in the Sydney episode was done by the US branch of a Japanese voice acting company. So we may be listening to US people putting on Australian accents.

That said, Rin’s VA did a good job with the English, fitting the character’s fluency level given his background. Much better than some of the other ‘English-fluent’ anime characters out there.(stares at Terror in Resonance’s direction).

This is incredibly relevant right now: In case this hasn't been mentioned yet, Sousuke, Ai and Momo will also have character songs!!

More importantly, one of Ai's songs is called "He's so perfect"

So we may be listening to US people putting on Australian accents.

I find this unlikely because in all but one case, they actually sound like Australians. As this very wiki's page on Australian Accents notes, when American's try to imitate the Australian accent it comes across as far too English to be authentic.

If it was done in the US, they probably rounded up a bunch of Aussie ex-pats. Or as I noted up thread, Kiwi's or English. New Zealand is close enough (and there enough New Zealanders in Australia) that they can generally achieve as close enough imitation of the Australian accents (unless you get them to order fish and chips evil grin). The English achieve the same ability by years of being bombarded with Australian soap operas.

Finale:

  • Yeah, Haru found his way. But I'm kinda sad that he had to give up his "I only swim free" mindset. Couldn't he have kept it and still be going on about his dream?
  • Don't treat Nagisa to anything ever.tongue
  • Remembering how they got to that stage. Happy memories. Sad memories. Without them, they wouldn't be here.
  • And so, they stepped up to the plate in all that splendor and...came sixth overall. Not bad, I guess.
  • Oh, so they did get a chance to swim in a cherry blossom pool. Rin sure surprised them.

Well, this was a nice way to end it all. Some dramatic bits were unnecessary, but whatever. Keep swimming, my friends.

Been kind of saving up on this one, due to lack of time before. And then I didn't want to watch half a season and having to wait for an episode or two for the finale. I want to either watch everything at once (or as reasonably fast as time allows), or one episode at a time.

Episode 7. In which they swim relay.

Someone likes his protein powder. The others don't quite agree. And honestly, I don't see the problem with it. Although I'd probably prefer Kou's cooking anyway.

By refusing to acknowledge someone, you're explicitly acknowledging that person. And honestly, it's a very stuck-up concept anyway.

Well, obviously they can't win in the middle of the season. It's not a climax.

Epispde 8. In which you can see the skies.

Feeding each other, and everyone in the classroom notices. Nice detail in the flashbacks.

She can't swim? Someone throw her into the pool until she learns...

Episode 9. In which there are expecations.

Denied by brother. I think that brother knows his little sister at least that well. Or anyway, anyone with any kind of social skill would catch up on that.

Everyone have expectations on Haru. No way that can backfire.

Well, if his injury really did matter for the swimming he wouldn't have made it that far to begin with.

Ultimate team. Well, they've at least got four characters with decent characterisation and exposure, so it's sure looking as ultimate as it's going to get. As far as injuries allow, at any rate.

Wait, there are girls swimming too?

Episode 10. In which two ultimate teams compete.

If your body tells you something hurts, it means something is wrong. Should be kind of obvious, but if it's something that sneaks up on you like that, it's easy to ignore. And not all pain means you're going to get worse from training.

He's not crying. He's exuding excess water he's absorbed while swimming.

Episode 11. In which lights get lost at sea.

They're sure popular.

Someone rebutted her saying. That's not too common.

I'm not sure Kou would appreciate that gift. Although probably more than [[Ruth Rokujyouma No Shinryakusha]].

Well, that's not something most people wake you up for.

Episode 12. In which things go south.

Nice to see that they're getting a little warmer dressed when they head that far south.

The English is surprisingly good. The accent is a little off at times, but not bad. Or maybe it's just the voice acting that's off, since Russel and Lori actually sound like they're Australian.

Is it that big of a deal to sleep in the same bed?

Smile.

Episode 13. After which I don't have anything more to watch.

Makoto swims with a dolphin. Nagisa swims with an orca. Rei swims with penguins. Haru swims with his team. And butterflies. Kind of interesting, since they're swimming with each other's animals, accoring to the animal motifs on our page.

Not bad overall, I guess. A little bland, honestly, at least compared to the first season.

Nitori: Proof that hard work really does pay off.
