Need help. I am to do a project concerning saints from the Benedictine Order. Any books that I can find to use?

http://www.osb.org/gen/saints/ has a list of saints, each with "Related Resources."

http://www.ccel.org/ccel/gregory/life_rule.html is on St. Benedict specifically.

I looked on www.litpress.org, but couldn't find A Benedictine Martyrology, which definitely sounds like an encyclopedia of Benedictine saints and a good starting point for any such investigation. They have contact info on their website, so you could always ask them about it - AFAIK, they were the publishers of that book back in 1922.

[up][up] I have to do a sort of book about the following:

1. St. Benedict of Nursia

2. St. Scholastica

3. St. Bede

4. St. Walburga

5. St. Odon

6. St. Anselm

7. St. Gregory the Great

8. St. Bernard Clarvaux

9. St. Anschar

10. St. Aelred

One page is the saint's picture and brief history. Next page is to contain ten sentences about the lesson learned about said saint, then three sentences of discovering values from said saint.

[nja]

[up] Thanks

The Saint I was named after for some reason is unofficially considered the patron saint of gay people

[up]Your name is Sebastian/Sebastián?

If so... man, people are still unaware that he didn't die due to phallic arrows (which I assume is where the common 'he was totes gay' modern interpretation comes from), but due to the fact that he was beaten to death with cudgels and his body thrown into the common sewer.

I blame the Renaissance imagery's subtext and Derek Jarman's movie about him.

Maybe he LIKED it when several phallic things were forcibly inserted into him and came back for more the second time

In other news, in the words of the Pope: If Priests were incapable of being merciful during confessions maybe this isnt the job for you.

I love how androcentric things are even when talking about LGBT. Why, sure, associate all gay people with the guy who "loved the D". Nevermind that this particular representation is rife with Unfortunate Implications to begin with.

Seriously, isn't there some saint around that, though chaste, loved people of his or her own gender?

[up]I don't think there is. Also, are you referring to love in the non-romantic sense? Sure, there might be some.

In the romantic sense? Let's just say that being chaste, in the tradition of the Catholic Church, is not merely about 'no sex' (though it is a major part). Being chaste is also about refraining from developing romantic (even if non-sexual) feelings for someone (in order for one to devote himself or herself to God and to help out humans in general (charity/caritas), as much as possible)). Regardless of sexuality.

Hence why there aren't many chaste people, apart from those who choose to become priests or members of a monastic order in order to remain chaste. Even then, naturally, some tend to fail at remaining so.

Keep in mind, though, that, outside of the monastic/clergical context:

Roman Catholics view sex within marriage as chaste, but prohibit the use of artificial contraception as an offense against chastity, seeing contraception as unnatural, contrary to God's will and design of human sexuality.

So, the interpretation of chastity has different branches, depending on the area.

Well, Chastity depends in the context of use:

In case of the priests and many religious people, chastity is indeed a renounce of any romantic ties in favour of service to God and the community they serve. St Paul already spoke of this in his cards and St Augustine's influence in this is why the Sex Is Evil trope eventually came to be. Mind you, we all know that's a lie but it does have some logic behind it.

As for the laicity, chastity is more or less synonimous with abstinence which also has a strong relationship with the matters of family. Let's be honest, contraceptives can fail and no one wants to be the guy/gall who has to deal with this once they don't work. Hence the logic behind chastity and responsible sex: if you can't deal with the unforeseen consequences, better avoid it until you are ready.

Instead of focusing on relatives that divide us, we should find the absolutes that tie us.

It's not a chastity issue, it's a fucking with god's plan issue.

You're supposedly not supposed to use science to thwart god's natural biology.

That's why birth control and artificial insemination is bad, because you're using science in place of "nature". Basically, if god wanted you to have children, you will have children.

Why can't science be part of God's plan? The same way God sends a boat to rescue you from a flood can't he send the tech of artificial insemination to give you a kid?

You are using logic.

They only use logic when it suits their plans and when it doesn't they resort to GOD WILLS IT!

[up][up][up]Old joke, always relevant.

It rained for days and days and there was a terrific flood. The water rose so high that one man was forced to climb on top of his roof and sat in the rain. As the waters came up higher a man in a rowboat came up to the house and told him to get in. "No thank you, the Lord will save me!" he said, and the man in the rowboat rowed away.

The waters rose to the edge of the roof and still the man sat on the roof until another rowboat came by and another man told him to get in. "No thank you, the Lord will save me!" he said again, and the man rowed away.

The waters covered the house and the man was forced to sit on his chimney as the rain poured down and a helicopter came by and another man urged him to get in or he'll drown. "No thank you," the man said again, "The Lord will save me!"

After much begging and pleading the man in the helicopter gave up and flew away. The waters rose above the chimney and the man drowned and went to heaven where he met God.

"Lord, I don't understand," he told Him, frustrated, "The waters rose higher and higher and I waited hours for you to save me but you didn't! Why?"

The Lord just shook his head and said, "What are you talking about? I sent two boats and a helicopter?!"

So, I wrote an essay for class (its supposed to be a social narrative) about how I feel as a lapsed catholic. I was wondering if anyone would like to read it?
