Re: [1], don't assume all works will offer the same depth of characterization. In many cases, "partial context" may be just about all there is to it.
I don't think partial context is enough to remove it. Mostly.
Check out my fanfiction! These partial-context examples sound a lot like shoe-horned examples. If you can't come up with enough context in your example to make it clear it does fit the trope then it's probably not an example.
@79 is my stance on these too - probably because of my wick cleanup work.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanWow, when I suggested the special display mode, I did not expect such a positive response from Eddie! I seriously thought it was pie-in-the-sky dreaming. I'm both flabbergasted and a little flattered to have my suggestion taken seriously.
That said, I was thinking of special markup that could be used to hide things from normal display, but still allow them to be seen in the special display mode. That seems a little easier than trying to automatically parse and diagnose problems. But if Eddie wants to try to tackle both, well, far be it from me to say no. But I still think some sort of markup, which relies on human judgment, would be useful for cases where the automatic analysis falls short. People are just too creative when it comes to writing a ZCE. :)
Speaking words of fandom: let it squee, let it squee.I see that while some patterns are almost certainly wrong (Like a single subbullet or an example with just one word apart from the trope), others aren't and will need deliberate tagging.

There should be enough context that someone unfamiliar with the work but familiar with the trope can tell that it's an actual example and not a shoe-horned trope. Now, some tropes on some pages may be self-explanitory with zero context (The Good Chancellor on a character page, for example. Most context would be "He's good and he's a chancellor"), but most needs some context.

The Good Chancellor is definitely not self-explanatory. Any example of that trope should go into that character's mindset and things they do or least try to do.
Ultimately, an example needs to go into how the work is using a trope.

Seems like we have a pretty good consensus. Let the battle against ZCE's resume.
Goal: Clear, Concise and Witty
On the other hand, not all character quotes are done using the special formatting thing. I know I've occasionally made a character quote integrated into the entry, instead of setting it off with the quote formatting.
Not to say that the above is a huge problem, mind you, but I think it's something to keep in mind.
