Decided to just ask another question; what is the general opinion on here about the "multiple systems" on Tumblr?

Are they really DID? Or just attention seekers?

[up]You may need to explain that a bit. For starters, "multiple systems" in isolation of other key words is a horrible search term. And, not all of us do that much Tumblr.

[up][up] I'm not sure what you're asking, but based on limited experience with Tumblrinas and self-diagnostic, assume they are wrong, lying or ignorant until you can objectively verify what they say. Even with other matters that doesn't concern self-diagnostics you should assume they're wrong. I'm not saying everyone on Tumblr is bad at psychology, but there is an overwhelming amount that have no idea what they are talking about.

There is a lot of attention-seekers on Tumblr.

[up] Let's not beat around the bush - the general public's understanding of psychological theory is somewhere between 50 and 80 years out of date, depending on whether or not they've graduated to Stanley Milgram or still messing around with Sigmund Freud.

It's like how people who hang out on Reddit (those poor unfortunate souls who can stand spending time on larger subs there, anyway) like to self-diagnose something like severe autism or Asperger's Syndrome just because they don't ever try and hone their social skills.

As for [up][up][up] that, I'm going to say the same thing I usually do in this kind of situation: Are you personally involved in/well-versed in/a scholar of this type of psychological phenomenon? If not, I don't see the point in fucking around with definitions or speculation because it's speculation based on something as flimsy as an online persona. There really isn't much point in arguing about whether or not it's attention-seeking or a genuine (if EXTREMELY rare) psychological condition short of actually having some kind of data point to argue with beyond a page or two of text on a website.

[up][up]DID is disassociative identity disorder.

You can imagine how people act with that bucket of worms.

If we can't have discussions here without ad hominem attacks on people whose beliefs we disagree with, then let's not discuss them.

Nick, triggering people is never fun and never okay. While it is true that the term does get misappropriated sometimes as a form of Berserk Button, other people have serious triggers with serious issues behind.

Imo its base human concern that should make it clear that erring on the side of caution and assuming triggers are always serious and should be treated that way. Just because a few people use it wrongly doesn't make it less important for those who don't.

Well I know what DID is I just assumed Tumblr had added its own little twist. What's all the Tumblr stuff about did I miss something?

I'd like to offer that judging the self-diagnosed psychological issues of social media cliques is barely scraping the edges of acceptable OTC conversation.

[up][up]What some googling found

And while tumblr has its flaws and crazy corners (as most Social Networks have) how about we don't generalize it as all crazy.

No social structure is monolithic.

Edit: Considered self-thumping, but figured linking it for information isn't harmful. We should still change the topic, though?

But. I don't even know what goddamn Tumblr's "multiple systems" is. I am just going to assume it is some made-up disorder given the warnings and to combat them I dispatch Superhero Sigmund Freud

Are they really DID? Or just attention seekers?

To try and answer your question, I'd say that if they act the way you're describing it doesn't matter what they are.

They could be someone with genuine problems who's been suckered into Special Snowflake Syndrome, they could be out to mess with people, they could be a messed up teenager who is making up problems because they feel they can't ask for help about their real ones, they might simply be someone looking for friends who is latching onto the only community they can and doing whatever it takes to 'fit in'.

Short of them being a troll they are going to need serious psychological help, that's something the internet cannot provide. Online without a lot of research there's no way to tell what of the possibilities a person is, such people need those around them in real life to try and help them.

Edit [up] It seems to be people online who insist that they have a mental health disorder, refuse to seek treatment, accuse anyone who suggests seeking help of discrimination, and use their self claimed disorder as an excuses to make unreasonable demands of others.

Though I do wonder how common such people are, like I'm sure they exist, this is the internet, but I doubt they're a significant population of any site, even tumblr.

Took their sweet time. Anyone know what finally pushed them? I'd assume commercial interests made it unprofitable?

I havent read "Psychology Today" since I was a college student, but I wonder how many such ads they had anyway. This may be more a case of updating some old and out-of-date policies, perhaps.

I forgot how much I hate classes...oh well.

I also wish I could tell my patients how happy I am for them sometimes. Such as my one dear little solider who came in with his divorce papers. I'm so proud of him for finally standing up for himself and making healthy decisions. As a counselor, I'm not allowed to express these ideas or directly bait him, but so many times I just wanted to yell, "LEAVE THE BITCH!" instead of my calm, "Do you feel this was a healthy reaction?" routine.

One of the main reasons why I do not do clinical stuff.

I am not good at not letting people know exactly what I think of them with my body language. Must be all the "putting my thumb and index in front of my eyes and imagine I am squeezing them" or the "this is a psychological test about how long can you go without oxygen. My hands around your neck are helping".

Also my jokes are pretty bad, as you can see.

I should record myself in the next few sessions and see what my mark is. Now I am curious! Regardless, I am glad that he is growing and learning. Even more I am glad that he isn't going to break his counselling. This will be a major adjustment for him and I don't want to lose such productivity.

So I imagine most of the things you deal with are PTSD related stuff?

I specialize in children's trauma actually and started with a joint family program where I would help the children and the parent with PTSD reconnect and rebuild. Then my boss realized that I had a knack for it and gave me all the PTSD clients...

All...of...them...

Now that I am back for my Doctorate, this has changed and I am no longer accepting new clients, but I am not getting to work with children as much as I would like. At the hospital previously I was in the children's ward.

Adults are a unique challenge I am learning to adapt to.
