Or Yamada and the Seven Witches. MAL link FYI.

I just moved the page for this to here (or here), and added a few details.

Anyone else reading this?

The page needs some wiki magic. I'm not great at page creation - there's supposed to be a space between "To" and "7", but I'm not sure how to do that - and obviously the page needs work.

Regarding the series, I quite like Yamada, though he's an idiot hero. He's one of the most endearing morons I've encountered in manga.

He's also really expressive and that makes for some pretty amusing moments. One of the funniest things about him is his comical overreactions. He's kinda like the anti-Kyon in many ways, although both are Book Dumb, Yamada is more a loud, outgoing, outspoken person who tends not to think things through.

You may have seen a lot of this before, but notheless this is a series that plays a lot of tropes straight and does it well. There are multitudes of tropes to add to the page.

The supporting cast also has their moments, and all in all I just have fun reading this manga, which is the point.

I would recommend this series. Just be prepared for some pretty mild ecchi (mostly just fanservice). It's packed with tropes, but somehow it's one of those series that works even though it plays so many straight.

I've been reading this for about... thirty chapters now? It's pretty great.

The things that makes it good, to me, are that 1) characters are curious and proactive, 2) things continually happen, and 3) the humor, as a rule, works for what it's trying to do. A set of scanlators that are very good at communicating (or creating) character voice certainly helps! It strikes a good mix of humor and sincerity.

I'll probably reread it and see what I can add sometime soon.

Indeed. One of the good things about it is, the setting is just familiar enough but I still can't tell where this is going. Even though at this stage there's more witches powers revealed than not.

I think the page is coming along nicely though.

The latest chapter reveal seems to promise some more to the power dynamics. Since it involves another non-witch with an ability. And this one looks more irreversible than Yamada's. Depending on what happens to the overwritten power.

It's also spelled out that Yamada isn't actually a witch, but I kinda thought that was obvious.

Previous chapter was a School festival one, but I guess that's not over yet since the President still needs to announce his successor.

Pardon the necro but...

Holy rushed anime, Batman! Just 12 episodes for the first half, 90+ chapters? The series is big on plot!

I prefer the antics to the plot, so I was disappointed in the rush in the first episode, and it seems like the rest won't be much better. I really was hoping an anime adaptation would have more time than the live action version. I mean, the live-action version does show that they can compress the plot that much, but that doesn't mean they should.

Yeah, antics too. Besides missing some funny stuff with peeping toms, they've skimped on Yamada and Shiraishi's budding friendship. That's not gonna be crucial later on, sure.

To be honest, I'm glad they skipped most of that stuff. They spend 6 chapters faffing about before even introducing the rest of the main characters? The antics of the series simply aren't that fun without Miyamura or what's-her-face. I think this was a series that took a while to find its footing, and the first episode of the anime skipped ahead to where that footing was found. I predicted the anime would be "physically painful" and so far it isn't.

That said, if they actually plan on getting to all the stuff in the OP, then plenty of other stuff will also be skipped and I'm not quite so sure about that. They even cut out a character entirely? Maybe?

You can almost tell that the voice actors involved are having a lot of fun. Especially in those last few minutes of the second episode. That said, body swap humor never gets old. I'm worried Shiraishi will become Out of Focus because of how nonchalant her character is, but the manga spoilers I got stated that she actually became Yamada's girlfriend, so there's that.

Miyamura is just the best.

Last episode had some nice character interaction that the first episode skipped. But the true test of pacing begins next episode as they discover the 7 witches proper.

In retrospect, it's not that they skipped it so much as they were saving it for this, the introduction to the whole student council plot. In the manga, the request they had to solve for the president involved a character who never appears again (well, she gets cameos, but she's basically a non-character), so making the story more focused on the main characters is definitely a good thing. Overall, I like the aggressive approach to adaptation they're doing here. It doesn't even feel rushed if you don't know what they cut out.

Saori as Shiraishi and as Yamada-as-Shiraishi is my favourite VA in this. She sounds exactly Yamada-ish enough when she needs to.

Also this is a pretty good part of the story where we get multiple witch powers.

Welp, finished reading through this entire series in...a little under a week? Solid marathon that was. Good series, though I gotta say the manga is definitely giving off some finale arc vibes right now...don't know if anyone else is feeling that way.

(also does anybody know what day CR posts new chapters?)

It's clear that the current arc and quite possibly the series is ending relatively soon. In August is my guess. But there are still things that need to be resolved so a third arc isn't entirely impossible though I wouldn't get my hopes up too much. However, the ending still leaves me wondering a bit. If it simply ends with Tamaki becoming president, and Yamada and Miyamura returning to their club, it would definitely be a happy ending, but not the most exciting one. The first witch war ended in a perfect way with the witches losing their powers and having learned to live without them. In the current arc, there's nothing preventing someone like Ichijo from coming back and wreaking havoc again.

By the way, in my time zone (GMT+1) the new CR chapters usually come out at 2 AM Wednesday (sometimes 1 AM), so I guess that would mean somewhere between noon and early evening for most of North America.

[up]Thanks; and I think that the nature of the happy ending is going to depend really heavily on what Yamada's missing memories look like. That's basically guaranteed to be a massive gamechanger.

Plus, like the tropes page points out, there's no real villain in place for this arc yet; Ushio is close, but considering how the first war was resolved I have doubts as to how villainous he's really going to end up.

I've heard theories, which I liked, that the one girl who has visions of stuff that will happens vision of Shiraishi assistant might still come true since Tamaki is becoming president, and that the new building built to replace the old building might burn down instead.

Though I don't know if Kurosaki will honestly stay with the council, since he only joined up because Miyamura was there, and Yamada knows his secret.

Nene arc was handled pretty good. Will the other witches except the last one get just an episode each though?

Hvedekorn Since: Nov, 2010

Looks like it. Otsuka's arc was handled reasonably well (though they skipped the chapter where she declares her love to Yamada/Shiraishi), but IMO Sarushima's arc broke the limit for how many chapters you can cram into one standard episode. They didn't spend any time on actually examining the power, and they randomly left out the explanation to why Yamada had to swap bodies with Shiraishi before going on a date with Tsubaki.

Noa's arc will probably be done in one chapter, too - sadly as it's one chapter longer than Sarushima's arc. But breaking it up into two episodes would make it impossible to adapt all of the remaining chapters in only three episodes.

Another note is that the lightning-fast pacing probably works better here at the start when it's almost pure comedy and arc-based. After Noa's arc, the series gets a bit more serious and the plot threads start to tie together. But there's barely time to linger at the more emotional moments (making them lose their impact), and some plot-relevant explanations may be shortened/combined to the point of being incomprehensible.

The manga is relatively fast-paced on its own, but there's still so much material to cover...maybe this would've worked better with something closer to 16 episodes? Though I don't know if that's actually something people do...

I just saw the second ova subs.

Nice to see some Yankee-kun and I got a chuckle out of seeing Kurosaki wearing a hoodie that says I love Miyamura.

After watching the latest episode, I have a question. The student council president is the only one who should know the names of all seven witches. Since that's the case, would the president's knowledge of that be erased when their term ends or do they get a free pass?

OmegaRadiance Since: Jun, 2011

A free pass most likely.

The outgoing President would probably be soon to graduate too right? A free pass seems reasonable, especially since the incoming council would need some help adjusting during the transition period.
