A quick online search showed it is actually illegal in Switzerland and according to EU-law:

Article 33

Family and professional life

1. The family shall enjoy legal, economic and social protection.

2. To reconcile family and professional life, everyone shall have the right to protection from dismissal for a reason connected with maternity and the right to paid maternity leave and to parental leave following the birth or adoption of a child.

I'm glad to live in an ''actual'' First World country.tongue Seriously though, why are people keeping up with such kind of injustice?

It's illegal in the United States too. In her case, she can't afford a lawyer, and doesn't have enough confidence in the justice system to think she would win anyway.

She and her girlfriend are living entirely off her girlfriend's King Soopers paycheck, and she's had to resort to prostitution to make ends meet on multiple occasions. I wish to God I was making this shit up, because this is my best friend I'm talking about. The money to hire a lawyer who could actually take a lawsuit like that up to a corporate giant just isn't there.

How much money does she need? And what's the statute of limitations for something like that?

That's actually quite horrible. If you cannot afford to uphold your rights they might as well not exist.

Just because its illegal does not mean they cant do it, they just need to put down a more formal reason to fire you on the papers, even if you know why it really is.

Seen it happen several times, and not really much that can be done when they do do it, since if you try they just have to debate that they did not fire you for x but rather for y....

:/

[up][up][up] I don't know. She's given up on trying to fight it and is just trying to find a new job now that she's had her baby. The baby went to a family that she picked out through an adoption agency; she picked one where they already had one adopted kid and the mom herself had a history of having been adopted when she was a kid, so she could trust that they would take good care of her son.

She and her girlfriend lost their apartment a couple months ago, but we pooled our money and got a three-bedroom, which has made things easier on everyone. Things are picking up.

[up] This is also true. My friend got a job at the King Soopers where her girlfriend worked, and that lasted about two weeks. Ever since the bosses found out that the two were lesbians, they found an excuse to get drop my friend, and they've been trying to persuade her girlfriend to leave; she has too much seniority to just fire without a good reason, so instead they've been doing things like cutting her hours, demoting her from her management position, and using passive-aggressive tactics to create a hostile work environment.

Not that it seems to matter in Americaland, but that is known as constructive dismissal and is also illegal in plenty of places.

Not as many as you may think, Constructive Dissmisal was also legal back in japan, and often used even when you had a legitimate reason to terminate there employ, because if they "Quit" you did not have to pay a severance package, but if you fired them, you did.

Well, giving birth is a women's health matter, so it does rather make sense to talk about women specifically. Unless we're getting into weird-fanfiction territory, of course.

Or transgender people. I'm sure there are some transmen with biological children.

S it true that medicine was based on tests done on the male body for a time, and still is? I rememebr hearing somewhere that that's an issue in medicine today. Sorry if this is inaccurate

[up] While the mail in general is a terrible source, the article is at least generally accurate. It is a real problem that drugs aren't tested on women.

Wait, it's real that most medicine are only tested on men?

What the heck? Shouldn't basic common sense dictate to test them on both genders, to make sure there aren't any side-effects`and that they are actually effective?

It's true. Women tend to have more side effects and our hormones cycle so testing on us slows down trials.

[up][up]Shouldn't that be reason to do more test on women?

Then again... a lot of these companies want stuff out ASAP to sell it...

It's the whole worry that they'll become pregnant, and that they'll slow down the production cycle, and as a result the drugs aren't thoroughly tested.

Women need different doses of medication than men do. We don't know by how much with each drug.

Women have more and different side effects than men do. No one wants to document them because it means the drug will take longer to get to market.

I guess it's just another way the medicine industry is screwed up. I think cracked had an article covering that

It applies to other medical stuff as well. Women show different signs when they have a heart attack for example. Stuff that is often neglected. Men Are Generic, Women Are Special is not just an abstract problem but has tangible real world repercussions.

[up]Speaking of heart attacks, you'd damn well better hope the medic on scene knows how to remove an underwire bra before they whip out the defibrillators. I'm not kidding. That's an actual problem.

At our facility, our clients are not allowed to wear under wire for that reason. Likewise men have their attire restricted like the same because people are idiots.

Underwire bras also attract lightning. There are a lot of reasons not to wear them, really.

that seems like it would be a myth, even if it ups your electrical conductivity over a small area humans are relatively short and un-conductive, still many other things lightning would hit first especially with such a small amount of metal.

De-fibs are in direct contact, but I just cant see lightning.
