That last shot of the episode: amazing.

Looks like the Ripper trait runs in the family, as much like her son Stefan, Mrs Salvatore is a Ripper. With an extremely high (human) body count at over 3000. I'm sure the Originals have a higher body count (whether combined or total), but that was spread over a thousand years as opposed to Mrs Salvatore's -what, decade or two?- killing spree.

Interesting duo we have. humanity-less Ripper Stefan and humanity-less control-freak Caroline (is she still a control-freak even without humanity?). One kills violently, another so far shows restraint when not pushed

By the way, did Enzo ever turn his humanity back on since coming back to life, or did the writers forget he turned it off in the first place before his death? Honestly, I can't tell the difference between either state.

What was in your right hand is hope; And in another hand is something else to fade.

I'm not sure if Enzo is really giving up on his plan or just decided to get more Magnificent Bastard about it.

Also, calling it. Mama Salvatore's getting the cure. And some of her circle of friends is going to be the seasons final Big Bad

Also, damn...hope Kai survives this. I'm actually liking him now that he's not a sociopath anymore.

Oh my god, they killed Bonny. You bastards!

Also, aw. Evil Kai is back. Nice Job Breaking That Bonny

Edit: Promo says Bonny survives (yet again) but apparently someone else might not

As so the six-year reign of the main casts' complete inability to think through any of their actions ends as it must:

With them losing their pwecious Elena. Caroline- why did you think that turning off your switch could possibly end well? Stefan- you could, like, act like your switch was off? It's not like Caroline could tell. You know damn well how bad you get with your switch off. No excuses there. Damon- maybe you should at least try a plan A before pulling someone you admit you don't care about and everyone is telling you is crazy evil out of a prison world?

Stefan again! You know how much of an asshole Enzo is. Why are you leading him straight to the person you want to keep a secret? And why are leaving him unattended with her after knowing that he found out about her and that he hates you? Why is Enzo even still alive? This guy is like Klaus: guaranteed a self absorbed prick who is guaranteed to start trouble for basically no reason. Except, unlike Klaus, he's quite killable.

Bonnie- Kai before the merge had less of a bodycount than you or most of your friends. After the merge he actually tried apologizing, which is more than any of you do to your victims unless they're another one of your friends. He's also the most powerful member of the cast right now and you can't kill him because all of the other Gemini will die. So you stab him in the back while he's helping you for no other reason than to try to make up for what he's done. And then just hope he never gets out of the prison world that people have spent all season getting out of?

Elena- you've seen how humans end up around here. Why would you take the cure before having well and truly gotten the fuck away from this madness? The supposed awfulness of being a TVD vampire is hard enough to swallow as it is, but goddammit is there a single person you know who hasn't died at least once? You guys are giving DBZ a run for it's money on that count.

Bonus points: The Gemini covenant. How did any of this twin merge stuff seem like a good idea? What happens if the covenant leader just up and dies before a new set of twins are ready? How have none of the twins up until now decided to fuck that noise and get the hell out of there? What were any of you thinking?

It would be impressive how many bad decisions lead up to this ending if it had been done on purpose.

New season starts tonight. We open with a flash forward to 3 years from now, Stephan wakes Damon up from a coffin in Brooklyn and after that we return to present day and learn Damon is drinking his grief away with Alaric in New York.

Also, return of the diary writing monologues.

Wow. We TVD fans always talk about how quickly the show moves, but this premiere took it insane levels.

Honestly with all the crap this show puts Bonnie through, it was about time she got some pay back on an ash old who screwed her over.

Maybe, but she could have chosen a better target than the guy who obviously regretted it and had a history of Disproportionate Retribution.

Or maybe I just really miss Kai in his snarky and not-quite-as-evil-as-he-used-to-be phase tongue

Well Bonnie is hardly the only one on this show to incur the wrath of murderous sociopaths. Damon practically made a career out of it.

I mean, she actually targeted the guy who wronged her unlike some other characters who tend to take it out on the wrong people.

So, I'm catching up on Season 5 with Netflix and...

Stefan and Caroline going on a violent killing spree and sadistically murdering innocent people? This is really just gonna be swept under the rug?

Yup. This show's tendency to avoid consequences is also why what Bonnie did to Kai didn't bother me one bit.

Yeah, it's getting insanely distracting how I'm supposed to even feel bad about what happens with Elena when she flat out murdered an innocent woman as a message to her friends. Let alone how just about all the vampire protagonists are mass murderers multiple times over

To be fair.

I'm literally watching this for the snark. I am fully aware that everyone in this show qualifies for Villain Protagonist in some fashion and I'm not even trying to justify that objectively they are horrible people.

I just think they are entertaining horrible people.

Meanwhile, The Originals is partly great because the show never sugar coats how awful it's protagonists are and can get.

I'm watching partly for the culture of the New Orleans Vampire-Witch-Werewolf relations and partly for the Originals family drama. I finished season 2 not too long ago and it was great at that.

Oh, I think The Vampire Diaries is well aware that its characters are Villain Protagonists. Heck, near the end of Season 3, Elena actually admits that Alaric's plan to kill all vampires (including about half the main cast) is probably the right thing to do, that the world would be better off with them dead, and that by opposing them she is, in her own words, "the bad guy".

That actually marked something of a turning point for the show. The show started with its main characters as mostly good people (with the obvious exception of Damon), and the fact that the situations they found themselves in drove them to do horrible things was a big source of drama. Starting around Season 4, however, the characters started becoming pretty jaded about all the awful stuff they were involved with; when they killed some random Hybrid to help Jeremy complete his Hunter's mark, the only one who saw any sort of moral problem there was Tyler, and that was only because he'd been friends with the guy. Once the show had completed its corruption-of-the-innocent arc for its main cast, the show lost a lot of its emotional punch.

My issue there? It's kind of annoying to watch Klaus wriggle out og just punishment again and again and again. While Mikael may be a bastard as well, it's hard to cheer against him when he's after Klaus.

The problem there is the Originals' Contractual Immortality. The way the Vampire Diaries went about Vampire Sire lines meant that Klaus cannot die without wiping out the vast majority of the cast of the Vampire Diaries, which would put an end to that show without massive actor recasting. As a result, Klaus is allowed to largely skirt the crimes he committed as the Big Bad in season 3 and the whole conflict between him, the other Originals, and the Vampire Diaries cast becomes a "Shaggy Dog" Story where Failure Is the Only Option.

[up][up] it kind of helps that Mikael is far worse than Klaus and is kind of the reason Klaus and his siblings are what they are.

I kinda disagree there. Mikael might've been a hard, nasty bastard, but Klaus is fully responsible for his own actions and kills people for fun on a regular basis.
