I came across this new ITV series yesterday and watched the first episode. It's about Harry Gordon Selfridge and the rise of the Selfridges department store chain in the early 1900s. So far, it looks like a solid costume drama. The tone of the first episode reminds me very much of the Upstairs Downstairs revival — kind of fairy-tale-ish as opposed to gritty.

It stars Jeremy Piven as the titular character, an ambitious, charismatic American businessman who moves to London with his family and basically invests his entire fortune into opening the UK's first modern department store. His acting in this series amuses me to no end — it's very Broadway, very... John Barrowman-y. Enjoyable!

The show also features abundant Costume Porn and a handsome French man, so it's a great Downton Abbey substitute.

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it. And even if it is broke, just ignore it and maybe it'll be sort of OK — like the environment."

I'm seeing the ads for it now. It looks very similar to The Paradise...
