I probably would if I was in their place.

I wonder what else they'll remove. Perhaps next will be the female characters because seeing women fight is too sexy? Or maybe any moments where they're onstage singing because we can't scar the children?

Again, I really wish the Wii U wasn't region locked so I could just buy the JP version and not support this BS localization.

Like I've said before I don't really care but I am curious as to why NOA's localization team seems to have become more edit-happy in recent years. I do think some edits were totally justified though (like that one rape-y romantic support in FE Fates).

[up]It wasn't rapey, it was literally just using magic to give the appearance of a female for him so that he could help her get over her gushing over cute women at inopportune times. The only change that happened was changing it from powder to a blindfold.

No, the big change was the emphasis on consent. In the JP version he does it without her knowledge, which is, y'know, kinda really creepy. And yeah, it was rapey.

[up][up] With the important different that the blindfold was applied with her consent, the magic was not.

The problem with the Soleil support was that the MC drugged her without her consent, which is really really creepy and unfortunately about on par with the rest of Fates' writing.

With this game I think that it's showcasing Nintendo of America's rebranding of itself as 4kids. It seems pretty silly to age up everyone to 18 and then censor away everything that made then age up to 18 in the first place. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if we start seeing jelly donuts pretty soon.

[up]No, it's nowhere near 4Kids levels. The story still takes place in Tokyo and everyone still speaks Japanese, after all.

[up][up] I think I may have said this already but I just thought I'd point out that age-ups aren't new: Lyn, for one, was changed from 16 to 18.

Conspiracy theory: Nintendo are trying to squeeze out as many sales as they can out of this thing, and an M-rating ain't doing that. So chop chop. And they're also 4kids. tongue

Like I said I don't really care because I'm not interested in getting the game, but I am interested in what, if it was in fact any one thing, was the catalyst for this new trend.

I'm curious as well. I'm thinking this is more on the Western end than the Eastern end since the game basically went out as it was in Japan. But considering that the Western departments of Nintendo have less autonomy, who makes these decisions for them?

[up]That's not really what's happening here, but it's still funny.

And I mean, it's not like Japan's blameless here either. Just read this very interesting article and tell me that Japanese pop-culture's in a good place at the present. tongue

There was a thread on this forum about a dubbed anime where I noted people cared more about ranting about the evils of localization and that the original is always better and altering it is a grave sin that should not be forgiven. No one cared about the show itself, just some vague principles.

Predictably the same thing has happened here. No one cares about Tokyo Mirage Sessions itself, just that it gives them a place for their soapbox. It won't be the last.

Fates went through the same thing, but that actually has a relevant audience, so the conversation could actually drift towards other things.

My argument is basically: If you have a VERY Japanese game with tons of fan-service idol stuff to localise, just bite the bullet, go for the higher ESRB rating and own it. You're not gonna sell a ton of copies anyway, so why worry about making it 'respectable'?

I'm not saying DON'T change anything (there really are some things that can afford to go, like that iffy Fire Emblem thing above, where at best, the intent doesn't translate well at all), but for a game that was always niche to begin with, I think you can afford to take a risk. You published Bayonetta 2 and Devil's Third, Nintendo. I know you still want to be family-friendly or something, but if you're gonna publish M-rated titles that appeal to a narrower section of people, don't act TOO embarrassed about it.

So the theory is that even though Atlus is officially localizing the game the edits are due to some sort of override/veto by NoA, right?

@Sterok: Honestly, I'm still interested in the game itself, as well as a few other people here. I'm just bewildered that they're going to this much trouble.

The localisation has kind of alternated between not that much effort (No English voices, just subtitles, reduced costs on a low-seller) and a little bit TOO much effort (all this other stuff for, again, something that won't sell well anyway).

Well yeah this game has a lot of fanservice idol stuff. But the thing is, that's ALL it really has going for it. The people who this game is targeted toward like fanservice idol stuff; they probably like swimsuits and all that jazz. Take that away, and who is this game appealing to? People who will buy literally any RPG? Fire Emblem Fates could get away with its hackjob of a localization because Awakening had already built up a sizable fanbase and both the series and game itself got ample representation in Smash. Meanwhile, I doubt anybody just looking at the box will be able to figure out that it's a Fire Emblem-themed game just by looking at it, and the game is receiving next to no advertising.

And Japanese pop culture is pretty bad, but we aren't exactly much better. I think that the audience for such an incredibly Japanese game is going to want it to remain an incredibly Japanese game.

@Uninstall: Basically my point. I don't see who they're trying to appeal to with some of these decisions. I'm not outraged (annoyed, maybe), but the point of some of these changes escapes me.
