It's lame that the Midwest chapter isn't thriving in-canon. Those guys had what it took to make something of themselves. How broad-strokes are they? Which strokes, I should say.

Ok that didn't even scan - ANYWAY I'm going to try for the Silver Shroud mission tonight - any advice as I hear you can get Kent killed. And I like him. He's nice. And from before the war, LIKE ME! And the Vault Tec guy.

Continue talking as the Shroud, and eventually all the guards will run away. Then kill the leader, fast. I used a six-crank laser musket (charged before I came down the elevator) and gave him a VATS critical to the head. I'm not sure it's possible to save Kent without VATS. Maybe lots of Jet to slow time.

[up]If can pass a high persuasion check, you can convince the guy to kill you first before shooting Kent — you won't get rid of the mooks, but Kent will come out fine unless you carelessly lob grenades around or something.

[up][up][up] I don't think anything's really been said, just that it's more-or-less canon. Until we get more, I've just been assuming that anything that doesn't directly conflict with the main series stuff is canon.

[up] Unless you carelessly lob grenades around or accidentally shoot him in the face. Because my bad.

It was a difficult delivery, now it's growing up mean and strong.

Apparently the canon for the Midwest is that they did have a sprawling empire that spanned several states, destroyed the Calculator and his army, but was kneecapped by the Legion.

Well that was an interesting questline. I'll give a hint to what it was.

I spent TWO bloody hours trying to find where that stupid thing landed. Honestly if I didn't have Cait with me I might have missed it completely.

It always lands in the same exact spot, regardless of where it appears to land.

You can find that spot early and its hilarious because the trench is cut into the ground, trees are broken, but the thing is not there yet.

I should try to find that thing one of these days. I saw the thing go down while I was following the main quest with Nick and Dogmeat, subsequently forgetting about it until now.

Yup, random event.

The best part is this time around, while alien ammo is limited, you can mod the gun to use MFC. :D

I hope for an alien rifle mod though, I dont like pistols...

Yeah, I know that now, but the first time it happened I was at ground level when the thing fell out of the sky. Didn't help that the event kept triggering with buildings everywhere, meaning I only had a very vague direction to where the thing landed.

Is it possible to find a shotgun with limitless ammo capacity? What would be the fire rate on that without having to reload?

Or a fatman with poison. Thanks, RNG!

Well I finished the game with the railroad and wow was that underwhelming. I mean it's not a complete illogical mess like 3 but maybe thematically it's worse. And I hear the other endings are all basically the same? Lame. Well at least we'll probably have less "which faction is best" argument because I don't feel particularly invested in my faction and I don't see how the other endings would be much different.

I stuck with the Railroad entirely during my first run-through, and then reset it when I was about to reach the end out of sheer disgust.

It's pretty clear that the game wants you to think that they're the clear good guys out of this conflict, but I just can't stand them. Clearing out their base in my present Brotherhood Loyalist playthrough was a great moment.

They haven't done anything dickish in my playthrough yet. Desdemona is a bit standoffish but that's about it.

Desdemona dismisses the Minutemen and the population of the Commonwealth because of justified paranoia towards synths. The Railroad in general doesn't really seem very relevant or interested in the broader state of the Commonwealth, they're just happy running their little operation.

There's also a faction within the Railroad that has some legitimately questionable beliefs. For example, a good number of them actually think it's a worthwhile goal to try and liberate Gen1s, which does not fill me with confidence as to why they believe what they do.Bethesda tried too hard to play the Plucky Rebels card with the Railroad.

Now that I think about it, the Railroad's existence doesn't really make sense. The wasteland doesn't seem like a civilized enough place to have room for a civil rights movement. It's very odd, to see this kind of thing pop up in a post-apocalypse. Sure, Diamond City is pretty successful, but besides it and Goodneighbor, there really aren't any other major settlements in the game. Hell, people still have to deal with not being killed by super mutants when walking a hundred meters out of the door of Diamond City, are this many people really all that concerned about making sure Gen3s have a chance at a life?

Eh, I'd take them over the genocidal Brotherhood and the Institute.

I need to figure out my endings so the Minutemen win and the Railroad stays strong but not as a governing faction.

Oh really when?

The brotherhood are straight up fascists and the institute are people swapping dicks. Not sure how the minutemen feel about synths but the railroad are the only faction that are actively trying to save them so they're my first choice.

Really the commonwealth is such a weird place. It's big enough to support dozens of small settlements but for some reason it also has a fuckton of raiders and hostile wildlife. I mean OOG you can just say "well we needed stuff to fight" and fair enough but 3 and FNV were pretty good at justifying it. The capital wasteland was a shithole where deathclaws knocking on megaton's doors was just a tuesday and FNV was great at showing which places were "safe" and which were frontier. The commonwealth manages to have every civilized place near constantly under attack yet somehow civilization survives.

Most of the settlement are less than 4 people. It's less "Settlement" or "Civilization" and more "individual families trying to survive". The only big ones are Diamond City, and the place is a fortress, and Goodneighbor, which is a place where everyone's armed. (And I guess Covenant, which is also fortified and armed). You're outright told that without the Minutemen, any settlement that grows of any significant size becomes a target.

Bunker Hill outright bribes the Raider leaders.

Haven't encountered the Institute yet, but out of the three other factions, I would say that I feel that the Railroad is the one that stretches disbelief the most.

From a logistical perspective, I just don't understand how they function. Maybe it will be made more clear as I advance the story, but the other two factions have clear supply lines and support structures.

Whereas an organization as purely humanitarian as the Railroad should be really struggling to function in a post-apocalyptic setting but they seem to be relatively well supplied.

I might just be looking too much into things though. And again, I've only done a handful of missions for them so I don't know how deep the rabbit hole goes yet.

So far, I feel that the parallels with the actual Underground Railroad are interesting and I'll probably do some more missions for them.

EDIT: [up][up]

I feel like most RPGs do this though. There is always an overhelmingly disproportionate population of bandits, raiders, monsters...etc when compared to the general civilian population.

Actually, one of the things I like about Fallout is just how exagerated this is. As soon as you leave a settlement, you're no longer safe. I think that's cool, because it justifies why civilization would take so long to rebuild after 200 years and it gives a challenge to the player.

In my opinion, it's more jarring in Fantasy settings like Elder Scrolls. There is no reason why there should be so many wild bears attacking me on my way to Riverwood -___-

The Railroad is basically PETA. Their only focus is the freedom and rights of non-humans while actively hating humans themselves.
