Eh. They already made the most out of most East Australia waters in the first film. Besides some of the [[Australia Is Scary Apparently: nasties]], but that would focus on humans.

So judging people who talk about a new movie in the most basic speculation is the cool thing to do these days? Sweet.

Unless you're talking about the comments on that news page and the various people who are quivering rage at the title just reading the title as a result of the various sequels we've been getting, but has there even been any build up for people to get angry at this yet?

[up] The latter, and there has been plenty of rage at the idea of this project. Just getting my reaction to the fan rage out of the way, I have nothing else to say since we've seen nothing else of this. I'm very neutral to this happening.

Now I'm a bit curious, has it been confirmed whether Disney is actually forcing Pixar to do all these spinoffs? It's tempting but I want to get more details first.

Seems unnecessary, and I'd prefer more original Pixar stuff. However let's not forget Toy Story 2, another film thought to be just more direct to DVD cash-in garbage, which turned out to be (in many people's opinions, including mine) better than the first.

(Now, The Hangover III? Who the Heck thought that was a good idea? tongue)

As long as the Toy Story trilogy isn't erased from time, Pixar has the right to make any sequels they may goddamm well want.

I remember watching the original with my sister. Good memories.

Really, how long has it been since the first Nemo? Ten years? If they had only monetary gain in mind, they would have done a sequel ages ago.

Looking forward to this.

I think part of the reason for why a lot of people (myself included) are opposed to the idea of a Finding Nemo sequel is that the film has no High Concept on which to base another story, unless you count "fish exist" as one. In fact, I would seriously argue that Finding Nemo is the least sequel-friendly of all Pixar films. Most of the other films have some kind of general conceptual hook on which you could base more stories, but Finding Nemo already completely resolved its premise - finding Nemo - in the first film. Where do you go from there? And if they intend to call it Finding Nemo 2, doesn't Nemo by necessity have to get lost again?

All I'm saying is that at best I can see this film turning out as a separate story with the same characters but having otherwise little to do with the first one, and at worst, I can see this turning out as a retread.

[up]As I have said before, I see character potential for a sequel on exploring Nemo and Dory's relationship, since they barely interact at all in the first movie.

[up][up] I'm sure they'll give the new movie a different name than Finding Nemo 2.

Otherwise, I'm not seeing the basis for your complaint. The whole 'High Concept' worry? Or for that matter, that the only connection is the same characters? What's wrong with having a new movie featuring the same characters? Isn't that the point of a sequel, to have a new adventure with the same characters?

Unless you'e just going to have a new movie set in the same universe, but that wouldn't work as well given that the movie is more or less set in our universe but where fish talk to each other, but still. I can't help but think there's a bit of worrywartness to your concerns.

[up] I did say that just telling a different story with the same characters was the best case scenario. I'm not saying that this sequel absolutely can't turn out good if they do write a good story for the characters, all I'm saying it comes across as unnecessary.

Is any move really "necessary"? No, but take a look at how some other Pixar films ended: The Incredibles ended with the family still fighting crime together. Monsters Inc ended with the scaring industry revolutionised because of Sully's discovery of children's laughter. Cars ended with Lighting continuing his racing career with the help of his new friends. Wall E ended with humans starting to restore the Earth. I don't expect any of these endings were written specifically with a sequel in mind, but they all left something that could potentially form the basis of another story. I can see why someone would want to write those stories.

Finding Nemo, on the other hand, ended with nothing left to do and nothing to form the basis of a sequel except the mere existence of the characters and, well... the ocean. That just makes the planned sequel feel like a cash grab. Could it still turn out good? Sure. But I would prefer they focused their efforts on something else.

They still have a major potential character arc left to be mined in how the three of them adapt to being a family, not to mention on the fishtank's inhabitants getting used to actual life in the sea, or the sharks fitting into fish society. I see no shortage of threads to follow there.

I can think of 2 words to justify this films existence: Scenery Porn. The first movie came out in 2003 and looks gorgeous, I'm really excited to see how they make the ocean look with current technology.

I very much doubt they'll even be a Finding Nemo 2.

I won't believe in till it come strait from the horses mouth.

Or are you waiting for an official press release from Pixar/Disney itself?

I didn't realize this wasn't already official. I heard about this a while back, around the time the Finding Nemo 3D came to theatres.

I wonder if this means that a 3D re-release of The Incredibles would be a hint that they might be getting ready to make a sequel to that movie.

This is a little unnerving in all honesty. There's nothing inherently wrong with sequels, but they've been so sequel happy lately that one has to wonder if there's something fishy (no pun intended) afoot.

Uh, well, let's see.

Pixar Movies with sequels or announced sequels: Toy Story, Monsters Inc., Finding Nemo, Cars. Out of those, only Toy Story and Cars have/will have more than one sequel that we know of.

Pixar Movies without sequels or announcements for them: Wall-E, Ratatouille, A Bug's Life, Brave, The Incredibles, Up, three original movie projects coming up.

Yeah, there aren't that many sequels there.
