I watched it after seeing a reference in one of the Whateley Universe stories. It's a good movie. It's aged, of course, having been put out in 1970. I'm not entirely certain what to make of the ending. My take on it is that Gerber has come to an awareness that, as a black man, he will be targeted with violence, and therefore he needs to learn to defend himself. The other interpretation, off of the Wikipedia, is that he's become a "militant black" like the ones he condemned before.
