How Often Do You Look At Index Pages?

I'll admit that I didn't pay much attention to index pages...until recently.

Take the IBM Personal Computer index page. It states straight out that the list of games is not an exhaustive list.

Here's an idea of the scale of the number of games. I've had the pleasure of looking on this website. DOS Box basically has to list as many DOS games as possible. The list it has contains 3653 entries! DOS is an operating system that has been in use from 1980 to 2000, so the list was bound to get pretty large there.

Meanwhile, there's Microsoft Windows, an operating system that has been in use from 1985 all the way up to the present day. That makes it 27 years and counting. I wouldn't be surprised if the number of Windows games was roughly 10 times the number of DOS games!

Obviously, it will take a long time to post Video Game titles on that index page. But look at it this way: if each one of us posted 10 titles on the index page for a day, the list would get enormous!

As I understand it, the Index pages aren't meant to be exhaustive lists of anything because most of that information can be found on The Other Wiki. Their purpose is primarily to index existing articles for stuff, so every time a new article is added, we just stick it in the proper index.

Exactly. Our index pages are intended to serve as indexes to our pages. We don't need exhaustive lists of every game ever released for a particular OS or system. If you want to beef up the index pages, do so by making good solid works pages for the things that should be on them.

Okay then. smile

Here's another question that's occurred to me about index pages: how many index pages should a given work page have listed?

For instance, the page for the show Revolution had only one index listed. Thanks to my hard work, it now has a total of 10 indices listed! evil grin

For comparison, My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic has 17 indices listed. But that makes sense, considering that MLPFIM has the honour of being one of the Trope Overdosed works!
