Spike VGAs 2012

Oh boy, it's that time of the year again! Time to gather your Doritos, Mountain Dew, and AXE Bodyspray and gather round the internet box to vote for your favorite video games. And by favorite video games we mean the gaming journalists' favorite video games, not yours. The grand Spike TV tradition of putting multi-platform games in the running for Xbox 360 and PS 3 GOTY continues, as only one game in both is actually an exclusive to the console, while the rest are just cropped from the primary GOTY competition.

I thought Skyrim won GOTY 2011 from these guys though?

Character of the Year: Claptrap, Master Chief, Commander Shepard, Ramirez.

... If I didn't already know the VG As were BS, this would prove it.

I like Commander Shepard, but he isn't a character. Nor is Master Chief, or Ramirez. Claptrap and Connor are the closest things on that list.

Why is Mass Effect 3 even in the running for GOTY? I thought everyone hated it.

No, everyone loved it you whiny entitled fanboy vocal minority who just wanted a cliched happy ending when Bioware was creating ART!

I haven't even played it. Finding out it all comes to naught just sent me away from buying any in the series.

Oooh, Menendez is in for character of the year.

Given that he was created by the same guy who created Heath Ledger's Joker, he may have a chance.

The Spike VG As were always designed to appeal more to the "stereotypical young adult male in his 20s", with all of the assumptions that go along with that, as well as the teen crowd. So expecting any sort of interesting voting patterns or great choices for the categories isn't likely.

...They did heap the praise on Batman: Arkham City, though. And there aren't many people out there who thought that the game didn't deserve the praise it has.

Stupid touch controls made me vote for Dishonoured in Best Xbox 360 Game. I don't even have Dishonoured!

I have no interest in almost all of these games.

About the only thing I can really say is that the fact that Xenoblade isn't in the running for the overall game of the year is one of the biggest crimes in the world. I know it will never win but they could have at least given it a token nomination.

Such a blight on the reasoned and quality appraisal of the medium that the VG As are known for. Colour me appaled.

I'm surprised Walking Dead is in any of the categories. Spike seems to only care about games with intense action. And while Walking Dead is intense (and my personaly GOTY) it's not actionny.

As for ME 3, people hate the ending. It's just that for some people, this ruins the entire game, and for others they can't distiguish it.

I'm in the minority that likes the ending, but even if I didn't, the rest of the game is amazing and deserving of a nomination for GOTY.

Well, I tend to disagree. Mass Effect 3 wasn't very good as a RPG. Gameplay wise it's alright, but there's way too much wrong with it in terms of story and roleplaying to call it a good RPG. Sad that the only RP Gs out this year for it to compete with is a few ARP Gs and Xenoblade Chronicles (which I heard was good, but I haven't played it).

It's almost like people have different opinions or something.

Apparently Kotaku makes up a good chunk of the council, so I can't say I am too surprised by the choices.

And it's almost like this is a forum, in which people discuss their opinions instead of hiding behind the tired "It's an opinion" argument.

on the categories, I like how 3 of the nominees for best 360 title are also in the running for best ps3 title.

Come on they could have at least said that only one title may be shared between them.

They're also in the same order. AC 3 > Borderlands 2 > Dishonored.

I don't know what's sadder. The fact they did it, or the fact I can't come up with a proper replacement for any of them.

Probably the fact that you can't come up with replacement titles. Looking at it this way the Wii/U section isn't that bad since they're something new.

It also bugs me that they just merge all the handheld games into one section. The 3DS and Vita could have easily been their own sections.

Is Spike still trying to act like the VG As are the Oscars of video games? Because that can be a very backhanded comparison depending on your opinion of the Oscars.

Seriously, there's some fantastic 3ds titles that got he shaft, Kid icarus, Resident evil Rev, Theatrerhythm, KH 3 D,Prof. Layton. All GOTY contenders, glossed over for NSMB 2.

I think so. In a way they are since they're the biggest award show for the medium in town and the voting council are all insanely out of touch with modern media.
