The variation in MCU movies is probably a lot bigger than the variation in the Star Wars movies.
It is, considering the Episodes all follow one family and a fistful of peripherals who got caught up in the story. But considering the existence of interquels, and an entire Galaxy (if not Universe) to explore, I honestly think it'd be possible to do a soft reboot of the whole thing where we get that bigger focus. I mean, we already got it in regards to Legends. And if they really are sweeping the PT under the rug for this, there's no saying they can't just retcon or ignore the whole thing the way Abrams's Trek movies did in that franchise.
It's certainly possible but their picks for interquel movies haven't inspired me with much confidence so far. They're all OT centric stuff and two of them focus on specific characters. Any one of them could work on its own but having them one after the other like that doesn't inspire me with a lot of confidence that they'll branch out.
Well, the Star Wars variation will change too. The Episodes have their specific genre of Space Opera, fitting a blend of politics/adventure/war/mysticism, while Han Solo's movie could run like a heist movie, Boba Fett could be more of a straight action flick, Rogue One is going to be a military/espionage story.
Where the hell is this notion that the prequels are being swept under the rug coming from?
Aside from rumors and hearsay, I mean.
Regardless of their quality, the prequels have such incredible negative press that I cannot see any financial benefit to Disney trying to utilize them in any meaningful way. So if it is a thing that's happening it strikes me as completely understandable.
Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.Well there is that comic coming out that shows Anakin and Obi-Wan during the gap between 1 and 2.
That is the face of a man who just ate a kitten. Raw.True. And neither of the New Canon novels I've read (Aftermath and Lost Stars) has been shy to reference the prequels when and where it's appropriate to do so. Usually it's just a mention of some planet that was introduced in the PT, but Aftermath went as far as to have a supporting character be an upgraded B-1 Battledroid.
The OT is getting more focus for sure, but I get the impression that's mostly because that era is more directly relevant to the sequel trilogy, and that there is more interest in that era from the fanbase. It's certainly not a case of Disney aggressively disowning the prequels.
Indeed.
That is the face of a man who just ate a kitten. Raw.I'm going to get some flak for this but I wouldn't have minded too much for the prequels to get rewritten by someone who can actually do dialogue and remade with a less cardboard lead couple.
"War without fire is like sausages without mustard." - Jean Juvénal des UrsinsThey literally just released an expansion set for their big Disney Infinity video game set during the prequel era and featuring prequel characters like Darth Maul, Anakin and young Obi-Wan.
All the comics and novels in the new canon reference various elements of the prequel movies (hell Shaak Ti just cameoed in the Luke-centric Star Wars comic, while the latest Darth Vader issue had a subplot about Padme).
The toy catalog for The Force Awakens contains a bunch of prequel stuff like figures of Anakin and such.
Even the collector line of action figures Disney commissioned from Bandai Tamashii has Darth Maul and young Obi-Wan right up there with Kylo Ren.
If they're trying to sweep the prequels under the rug, they're doing a very shitty job of it.

Abrams talks about the movie a bit.
“And they’re not trying to Disney-fy it, they’re not doing anything other than, I think, an incredibly smart thing,” he continued “Which is letting [Lucasfilm CEO] Kathleen Kennedy — who is a remarkable person and producer — run and lead Lucasfilm to a place where I think it wants to go.”
And I totally missed/blanked on all of that. Which is where that comes from.
@higherbrainpattern:
OT formula: a ragtag band of misfits that are always good fight against an empire, that is always evil. Very black and white.
You cannot sweep PT under the rug when you call your sequel "Episode 7", however there is a chance the writers were trying to copy the "rebels vs empire" formula a bit too close.
That said, we are simply all afraid the film is going to suck because we like the franchise so much. There are no opinions in this thread, only theories. Impossible to form opinion it is, on a movie watched we have not.
My angry rant blog!I can't really believe that people actually thought that a "Disneyfication" was going to happen, at all. What did anyone seriously think was going to happen? Han Solo musical number? Evil stepmothers stealing away Rey at birth? Kylo Ren falls off a cliff into a burning snow forest? Empire on Ice?
(actually I really want to that last one now, Disney plz)
We already have Disneyfied Star Wars. It's called The Phantom Menace.
But.
I would have no opposition to this:
Considering the original film had to actually avoid a G rating by putting some burned bodies, 'Disneyfication' was never a thing. Misinterpretation of the series, selling out and bungling the license even more than before, and it becoming cheap action flick like the Star Trek Reboot has been people's main worry.
The middle one has been proven quite correct.

Does the Kylo Ren figure talk?
Some EU short stories and stuff. The bolded one especially has me curious.
An eBook anthology by Landry Walker follows on December 1 titled “Star Wars: Tales from a Galaxy Far, Far Away: Aliens” and tells the story of four background characters from “The Force Awakens.” The stories included are titled “High Noon on Jakku,” “All Creatures Great and Small,” “The Face of Evil” and “The Crimson Corsair and the Treasure of Count Dooku.”
And this one.
The timing is ripe for a new trilogy. That I don't dispute. Save it from the funk the PT left it in? Sure. Big Name Movies every year or two for the entire foreseeable future? We'll see. It might work out, it might not. Are people tired of Marvel's constant stream of movies every year or two? Long as Lucas Films handles this right, we might NOT see a burnout.
