Ohhh I see. Looking through the page history, Fast Eddie did exactly that because "sorry, but this is just tons better" (Girl Genius pic). Then someone must have changed it to something else (oddly, can't find that edit), then FE changed it back to the GG pic, then immediately changed that to the SMBC one, then added the tag.
My brain hurts.

Yeah, the current pic is the one that Eddie decided on keeping. Since this is a "don't touch the pic" page, I'm gonna go ahead and lock this one.

What's going on with For Science!? It's got a "please don't change the image" tag, but the two Image Picking threads I can find (both initiated by different people who didn't like the current one, incidentally) are from May '11
(which decided on a different image, and according to Wayback Machine implemented it) and from Dec '11
(which apparently was locked because there was a "don't change the image" tag).
Unless there was another thread I can't find, I can only assume someone reverted the change made by the first crowner, and then added a "don't change this again" notice.
