Amusingly the Nintendo of America youtube page is currently the only one I can see that HASN'T posted the trailer for EarthBound & EarthBound Beginnings yet.

Not that I'm actually a Mother fan, but is there a reason why they still won't import Mother 3? I'm just really confused at this point.

My guess is because it's a Game Boy Advance game, so it's pretty different from the NES and SNES games.

It's probably because of the Magypsies. We were talking about them last page, which was over a year ago now.

I thought there were already GBA games on the Switch?

While some third-party companies have released compilations that include GBA games on the eShop, like the Castlevania Advance Collection, there isn't a Game Boy Advance NSO yet. Or a Game Boy NSO, for that matter. I wouldn't expect either until at least September.

The GBA is incredibly easy to emulate (GBA is on the Wii U's Virtual Console) and was similar enough to the SNES to run a bunch of ports from it. Nintendo just wants to avoid Mother 3.

That would be really stupid if that wasn't the case.

Considering there was a GBA emulator back in the day, that's very easy to believe.

Thanks for the answer. I should probably leave now since I wasn't even a Mothers fan to begin with. I just think it's unfair how Mother 3 gets treated. It's been decades now.

Enlighten me on why it's acceptable for the 1st game to get imported but not Mother 3?

Someone already pointed out a possible problem earlier on this page. How valid this is, I don't know, since all of us know very little about how trans issues are treated in Japan or how much Nintendo as a company feels about it, but it has been the suggested issue.

In any case, acting like it's an actual insult to the fans is... not helpful in the slightest.

Edit to add: I'm playing Earthbound for the first time. It's interesting so far, I was not expecting the enemies to approach me so aggressively. I was also surprised with how supportive the family is, and it seems like they're going to have more presence than families usually do when they're not part of the pc roster.

The first game has been ready to leave Japan since just before the SNES launched. No A fully localised the game and had it ready to go before they dropped it because the SNES would of massively eaten into the game's sales.

And because of that huge arse leak that happened a few years back we learnt that Nintendo is really good at archieving their data. So the reason the first game makes it out of Japan and not the third is because Nintendo hasn't done anything with the third game while they had the first game ready to go for literal decades.

That's interesting and all, but what the guy responded to me implies that it's ok for Mother 3 to not be imported at all.

Honestly, anyone who really wants to play Mother 3 can Legally Acquire it and play it start to end with the incredibly polished, professional-quality Fan Translation.

I will never, ever understand why people are still so worked up about wanting an official localization. If Nintendo did make one, people would just go on about how the fan translation was better until the end of time, anyway.

I wasn't aware PC emulation was even legal.

And I don't see the problem with just officially translating it either.

Its not legal unless you own the cart and dump the rom yourself. But... people find a way. Nintendo has notably turned a blind eye to the Mother 3 translation patch. Normally they C&D stuff like that.

The reason Nintendo has never gone after the Fan Translation is because Shigesato Itoi himself owns the copyright, hence why his name always shows up whenver MOTHER characters are used in Smash. They legally cannot do anything about it without Itoi's consent, and Itoi himself is perfectly fine with it and any fan games people make about MOTHER.

Woof. Really smart of Itoi to keep the copyright.

And bummer that MOTHER 3 has stuff that can be (or already is) a slap to the face of the queer community.

I would bet that if that (admittedly impossible) Link's Awakening-styled remake ever happens, they'd have to rebuild the Magypsies from the ground up to better reflect the queer community right now. I want to see MOTHER 3 happen officially, but not at the expense of the feelings and dignity of anyone from the LGBTQ+ crowd.
