I suggest Akko and Mari from Girl Friends (especially since this seems to mostly be a Yuri Genre trope). Here's a couple of possible images.

[up] Good suggestion (that's an awesome series), but I'm not really crazy about those particular pics, and I question if a static pic can get across everything the trope is supposed to cover.

And now for something completely different.

[up] That could work if cropped up a little, too much blank space for my liking.

How's this?

In the very least center it.

"Centering" it would mean including the portion of the speech balloon that I cropped off. It only took me a few seconds to do with the Paint program. -_-

It's not like the original is exactly centered in the first place either. The girls are just off balance like that.

Why? I think it emphasies the difference in size, which makes it more artistically interesting as an image, as well as pointing out that there's a contrast beyond just hair colours. I prefer the off-centre version.

I sit corrected on a static pic not really working for this. The last version works for me, but it could stand to be downsized a bit.

Why? It matches the length of the article.

[up] It's perfectly legible at the smaller sizes of the earlier suggestions. If the consensus is to go with the bigger version, that's fine, but this is a case where less is just as good as more.

Any specification for pixels wide/tall, then?

A quick-and-dirty resize at 275 wide is still legible, so I'd say that would be good.

[down] Works fine for me.

Is the text particularly important? Because it's getting a bit difficult to read in [up].

It's not essential, but I think it adds to the context of the scene. I took a stab at combining the big and small versions that removes the toning at the top and corners...is it more legible?

I can read it just fine.

And I think the text helps establish them as a couple.

[up][up] the almost-kiss and the little heart help establish them as a couple on their own. (oops, ninja'd)

Btw, I don't really see the "contrasting hair colors signify their opposing world-views" part.

A duo (often a romantic couple) whose contrasting hair colors signify their opposing world-views.
This is the most important part of this trope. It's not always romantic, it's not always Lesbian, but the contrast in hair colors does signify their opposing worldviews.

Any picture has to show this part.
