DDR is a good idea.
Btw, I'm skeptical about the studies that shows active video games do not work as exercise, because their explanation is very dodgy (ok, so people who plays DDR will think that they did exercise for the day and not take part in activities later on, resulting in an overall reduction of exercise. That does not explain why this happens specifically for games like DDR and not activities where you go outside).
Especially when there are now a lot of games that aren't any different than an aerobics video. They're just more interactive so you get feedback which can encourage you.
Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickAlso, they likely assist people who otherwise wouldn't do ANYTHING to do stuff.
And there are studies that show they are very good for physical therapy and encouraging people to start exercising.
Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickI cvan kind of see their logic though. At least in my case, when I exercise I'm constantrly hoping it'll soon be over so I can resume my normal activities.
If you've got the room, I rec Xbox's Kinect the most. Sadly, our living room is not large enough to really make use of Kinect.
Plants are aliens, and fungi are nanomachines.I posted a comment about high fructose corn syrup in the Troper Fitness Thread. I'm linking my post because it's only marginally pertinent to the discussion here.

The key word to that is "exercising". The problem is they give no reason as to why physical exertion through video games like DDR would give people such an idea while other forms of exercise do not. When you mention "exercise" you do not just think games like DDR right?
what I meant is. Much like they say people play DDR and then are not active otherwise. here is my average day
1: get up,. walk across campus to and from classes.
2: come home to dorm. exercise while watching a movie or playing a videogame.
3: sit the rest of the night unless something comes up to get up for.
In short. To a degree, I can sometimes see the exercise as something to be gotten through, not sometyhing to supplement with other active stuff afterwards
That would more be due to the mindset of the person, as opposed to the "video game exercise do not work" conclusion that they made.
Still, advice: stop thinking of exercise as "something to get through" but as something you goof around and have fun.
A sedentary lifestyle imo is okay IF you eat well and of course eat an amount that doesn't exceed your sedentary caloric requirements.
The problem is sedentary people who eat too much (and eat too much junk).
I don't know much about bulimics and bulimia, but even I've considered that perhaps people who can't help but eat too much may as well puke out what they've just ate before they end up with diabetes.
Of course, I'm assuming atm that bulimia is less worse of a condition than diabetes.
Plants are aliens, and fungi are nanomachines.No. Bulimia is a mental disorder that, if left untreated, can and will result in death or severe medical problems due to lack of nutrients. It's not a solution.
"I don't know how I do it. I'm like the Mr. Bean of sex." -DrunkscriblerianNot saying it's a solution. Just a (somewhat) less harmful condition than diabetes (perhaps) ???
Of course, just not eating / controlled eating / eating well is the best solution. With exercise though I'd rec exercise only after a good diet can be enforced.
Plants are aliens, and fungi are nanomachines.No. Bulima will kill you faster and more reliably than diabetes. One of these diseases can be managed reliably in a low cost way. Bulima is a faster, nastier, and costlier death.
Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickI knew bulimia was a problem but damn.
It was an honorWell, Bulemia causes you to lose your teeth, your oesophagus erodes, and then you haemorrhage internally and then even if they manage to stop that it's very hard to recover from. It's a nasty death.
Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickYeah. if you stay on your medication, get at least 30 minutes to an hour of exercise a day, and drop some pounds, Diabetes patients can easily live pretty much just as long as anyone else with minor complications. The severe complications occur when you dont get regular checkups and completely ignore regular intake of medication or just downright dont even bother eating even halfway sensibly. (whjich is why a lot of poor people die of diabetes)
(I had a diabetic professor who died recently..but the man was nearing his 80's so the erratuic heart behavior that killed him could just as easaily have been old age as it was diabetes, for example)
Bullimia, on the other hand, will kill you in less than a few months if you dont get help immediately.

Aprilla: There is another aspect. The saturation of food, food additives, flavourings, sauces, and seasonings with HFCS only compounds the issue. It is in a lot of food items.
Who watches the watchmen?(sighs) Even (too much) salt can kill. I did try just sticking with (ready to eat) canned fish for my proteins. But there's too much salt.
Plants are aliens, and fungi are nanomachines. We were discussing that in the Fitness Tread. It's crazy how you can OD on pretty much anything.
"Psssh. Even if you could catch a miracle on a picture any person would probably delete it to make space for more porn." - AszurAs a friend of mine said, it's best to eat in moderation.
Eating a Vanilluxe will give you frostbite.Bingo.
It was an honor"Everything is poison. It is the dose that determines whether it kills you or not." - someone way smarter than me.
There's also research that too much (for example) Vitamin C ain't good, but for now, it's (too much) fat, salt and sugar that are the biggest problems, food-wise.
Especially since junk food companies like to use all three together.
Though atm, I'm feeling way more annoyed by the companies that insist that their junk food is "healthy". Cause not only is it false advertising, people tend to eat more of something they "think" is healthy.
Blah.

That's why I DDR. Because no matter how good it is for me I can't associate it with actually being anything other than a game.
