Information? I got all the gems, I am currently grinding for money to buy health, food and fuel. Funny thing is, you can spam the hell out of the Prayer spell to get the ladder you need. I did all the monster quest in one session. But I really hate those gremlins, as they steal your food and stuff.

Technically done with Dragon Slayer II Xanadu...a Let's Play, that is. It was a very informative LP, too.

For those planning on playing it: it's a very long and difficult game, and full of traps that can leave you stuck and game mechanics that might screw you over. But it still looks like a fun and cool game.

My pc got a virus so I can't play right now :/ But I'm trying my best to fix it, it's shutting down randomly. Currently, I'm playing Uncharted on my ps3 grin

Anyway, I've been playing Xanadu remake and it's one of the best game yet. I say it's very complex, not wizardry level complex but, it got lots of features not seen in the games at the time.

Karma meter, level for equipment and spells, boss battles with boss battle MUSIC,lots of stats, the possibility of being a physical and a magical fighter at the same time, and others. I'll make a detailed review later, when I beat the game.

Shutting off randomly? That's not a virus, but a loose Sata/IDE connector pin on your Harddrive(assuming it is a desktop).

Ah. look what these old games made me do. I started looking for old 70's days text-based adventure games. So, my brain tried to assimilate all that, and it made me google these magical keywords "Text-based, RPG, MMO(I was playing Dead Frontier)": MUDS. Now I am hooked on them.

Playing Genesis and Icesus. I played Avalon, but that one needs a subscription.

Hey, sorry I haven't been around. I was too embarrassed that I'm having such a tough time with Ultima to post anything.

You don't need to be embarrassed, I am stuck killing Skeletons and Rats for now, and I have started the game months ago. I am actually looking for music so that I can get into the mood. Power Metal is just too fast for me(Yeah, I listen to horrible noisecore goregrind acts, but I want something to put me in the mood, you know). Maybe some Symphonic or Gothic Metal will do.

Okay, I got 3 of 4 Marks(now all 4 of them) in Ultima III and I'm going to start looking for a ship now, hopefully it won't take forever.

I can see how Ultima III improved from Ultima I but the result ended up being kind of boring to me...Certainly for 1983 it was ground-breaking but there is nothing too special about it other than that. Comparing it to Ultima I, I'd say Ultima I is more in the lines of So Bad, It's Good with the silly setting and extremely simple but fun gameplay while Ultima III is So Okay, It's Average with a more fitting but generic medieval setting and the slow tactical gameplay that doesn't require much strategy at all.

I'll finish it since it's pretty short and I'm already halfway through it but I was expecting something a little better I guess.

Why isn't 7th Saga on the list? That's a quintessential SNES RPG game.

so i finally got round to playing ultima 3, wondering how you increase stats?

supposedly, leveling up in this game should be avoided past lvl 2 untill the end of the game, but also levels up supposedly only increase hp, and nothing else anyway, so how do you increase stats?

no guide will properly explain so im at somewhat of a loss

also where to get dragon slayer from.

You level up HP from going to Lord English in his Castle, and that's what gives you Levels. To raise the other attributes, you need to steal a ship from pirates and sail it into the whirlpool. That will take you to Ambrosia, where you can buy stats (100 coins per stat point) at four different shrines.

However, pirates only start spawning at level 5. So you need to level at least one character to level 5, and then stop levelling until you've bought all the stats that you require. This will stop super-strong monsters from spawning on the overworld until you're actually ready for them.

Note that in lower levels of the dungeons, they don't care about what level you are; they just throw strong monsters at you anyway. So beware.

The dragon slayer? The game or the weapon in Xanadu?

Hey, everybody! For a couple of years now I gleefully indulge in reading the articles on TV Tropes. I find them funny and insightful. I was reluctant joining the group at first, but I changed my mind after reading this project. One of my favorite game "genres" is RPG and I've been playing them since my adolescent years. I want to join in this project because I want to play the retro RPG games I never had the opportunity to play either due to my naive youth or limited game purchase. Is it okay if I play ahead? I've read about the tropers' progress and the games I want to start playing are Ultima IV and Dragon Quest? Can I play the SNES version of Dragon Quest I & II? Thank you in advance.

[up] The basic idea is to play from first to last - but whatever makes you feel comfortable. Hey, I joined TV tropes a while ago but didn't post anything, but then I decided to jump into this one, since RPG is my niche genre.

I am more of the Console-Style RP Ger, but then playing the old CRPG has their share of fun, too.

Concerning versions, everyone is free to choose which version or port of the games they want to play. So you can play Dragon Quest on the SNES. smile

I'm afraid preparations for end of term exams have been cutting into my free time for playing games. I'm still grinding for the second dungeon in The Bards Tale.

i returned to playing a few days ago, i am moving onto the actual gameplay of ultima 3 (maxed out stats and pimped out my gear, got torches and tents, ect) and just got the silver pick from the cave of death, as well as the seal of kings i think.

also started bards tale volume 1, in which im playing with 1 monk, 2 paladins, a magician and a conjurer and of course, a bard.

almost got the magician and conjurer to lvl5, after which i'll have to gather some more money to get them to their next spell level, and then i will be ready for the first dungeon.

i cant seem to find dragon slayer 1 or xanadu, so i might be skipping those.

aside from that. ive been playing fire emblem new mystery and ogre battle march of the black queen and final fantasy tactics with a little arc the lad 2, although im mostly holding out on the others to focus on march of the black queen.

for some odd reason the sewers in bards tale volume 1 are looped. so basically, they exist in an alternate dimension in which they alone consist an entire planet. a weird one though.

I'm done with Ultima III. My opinion didn't change much, I was expecting something better. I wish I played the NES version so I wouldn't have taken 100 years to find a damn ship.

I'll take a break and then I'll play either Wizardry III or Dragon slayer II: Xanadu. I decided to skip the first dragon slayer because based on Steendy's experience with it, I probably won't be able to endure it.

finished ultima 3, focusing on bards tale now.

so ultima 3. was...better than 2.

however, its a horrid grind-fest, requiring you to grind on 3-4 exp per kill to lvl up characters (which you wont even want to do till the end of the game since it doesnt really benefit you at all, the only purpose being to get more hp and a ship)

when you finally get a ship you go back and forth between sosaria grinding money, and ambrosia, increasing stats for 100gold a piece and having to put up with one of the toughest (if not the toughest) enemy in the game twice to get to 1 of the shrines and leave, and that aforementioned fight will always end with someone poisoned, which is a further financial drain.

i cant wait for the days when leveling up increases stats. these shrines are starting to annoy me.

after that astonishingly tedious chore, begins the fetch quest, wherein you need to go into 4 caves, get 4 marks which damages whoever touches them 50 points each time (you might also want to get the gold pick which is used to get mystic weapons- not necessary but really helpful since the final dungeon inexplicably forbids projectile weapons), after which you go to a forrest town (meaning you have no idea where you're going in it), get the pray command, go down from where you get it to use it, to get the silver horn- then you go back to ambrosia and go to each shrine and pray to get cards necessary to complete the game and then you can finally go to the final dungeon and win the game. which requires you to put the 4 cards you just got in order, or you die. and i dont know how i was supposed to know the order.

thank god for save states, i guess.

so yeah, final thoughts on ultima 3? a chore. but better than 2.

I would like to apologize to everyone because I couldn't use the pc for so long. The professional that's taking care of my pc doesn't even know how to solve the problem, I really don't know what to do. For anyone who might know, I'll give all the information that I know: I formated the pc, got all virus out and cleaned the registry. I still get a blue screen after one hour of use, after that, I can only use the pc the next day. The name of the problem is Kernal data inpage error or something like that. If anyone know what the problem is, please post on the thread.

I'm really sorry for the weeks of absence. Everyone, please post your progress here on the thread so that I know what has changed from that time. For what I know, Razgriz won Ultima III and is doing something else while waiting for me. I was playing Xanadu when the problem arose. Today I'll get a laptop borrowed from my uncle so I can play Bard's tale while waiting for my pc to fix itself magically. After that, I'll resume my Xanadu play (Can't play right now because my save is in my pc). And then, it's Ultima IV.

I want to know everybody progress so that we can hopefully start Dragon Quest at the end of the year or maybe at the beginning of next year. Then, no more pauses, we'll play to our heart content. The project will really start when we begin Dragon Quest so I want everyone to be prepared for the awesomeness waii

I'll be more active now that I have a laptop. Later! grin

just finished dragon quest cool

6 levels below the required level to beat the final boss.

save states ftw.

but god damn, thats like 2 hours of save state and load stating while i do either 0 or 1 damage while reloading whenever the final boss wakes up. maybe i should have been more patient and grinded on metal slimes a bit longer.

gonna go back to bards tale and ultima 4, after thats done, im gonna skip straight to dragon quest 2.

Haven't moved an inch since last time. My final exam is on Thursday, and after that I should be able to finish The Bard's Tale sometime before Christmas. Unsure what to do with Ultima IV, but I can put it on hold while playing Dragon Quest with you guys, no problem. smile
