Colours (or colors, if you're American) form an interesting topic. Why? Well, the English language contains a huge number of terms for various shades of colours. I don't know if any other language has as many terms for colours as English does.

As You Know, there are basic colours, which are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. Then you have colours like brown, black, gray (or grey) and white. It goes without saying that there are loads of combinations you can form from these colours.

In fact, My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic is a perfect place to examine colours and their names.

For example, the Cutie Mark Crusaders have some interesting colour combinations:

  • Apple Bloom: Eye colour is orange-ish (actually brilliant gamboge), mane and tail colour is red-looking (actually brilliant amaranth), and coat colour is yellow-looking (actually pale, light grayish olive).
  • Scootaloo: Eye colour is purple-looking (actually grayish purple), mane and tail colour is purple-looking (actually fuchsia), and coat colour is orange-ish (actually light brilliant gamboge).
  • Sweetie Belle: Eye colour is green (actually sap green), mane and tail colour are pink and purple (actually grayish mulberry with pale, light grayish rose streaks), and coat colour is white (actually light gray).

Does anyone here work as a painter or has an occupation dealing in colours? I can tell you that I hardly ever hear of gamboge and amaranth on a day-to-day basis!

Oh, Equestria, we stand on guard for thee!

My favourite colour is Yebluregrorapurpink.

Or "poopy-looking grey" if you aren't awesome.

Basic colours seem to vary between cultures. :3 Like blue and green being classified under the colour term ao in Japanese, or azure being separate from blue in Russian. :3

When I was seven years old- that's a decade God I feel old -my sister and I got a 96 box of Crayola crayons to keep us busy on the plane to Walt Disney World. To this day, thanks to that box, I have considered 'macaroni and cheese' a color.

Wait, what? Orange is a basic colour? Isn't that just a combination of red and yellow?

Also in the same vein as Glacia, I remember that back in Primary School, "skin" was a very popular colour.
