For people living in latin america like me Dragon Ball Z was a big deal for a lot of us and til this very day he is absolutely loved because it marked our childhoods, just like Harry Potter did to many. I loved goku as a child and he is a great inspiration of mine. I think I actually cried when I saw him leave.

Like many I fell in love (not romantically mind you) with his pureness of heart, his determination, his smile, his positive attitude, his idealism, his silliness. He has a whole lot of what I like about a hero.

My main character is inspired on him , and while I am still designing her. I am worried that she might become just another empty Goku clone.

Not saying names... But I have seen many goku clones even in proffesional media. I feel that sometimes even Spin-Offspring feels like a cheap replacement of the genuine article.

I want her to be her own character but without losing that "spirit" I saw in Goku, but without being another Follow the Leader character.

For example I have considered making her intelligent (ala Doctor Who) to avoid the Idiot Hero/simple hero part.

What would do you advice me?

Here are some prototype drawings of her.

Well you could just follow the advice of the writers of Dragonball Evolution.

Anyway, looking back on my on work, one of my characters was a bit of a Goku clone. The key thing for me in developing him to be different was avoiding scenarios that Goku found himself in. And if I had to for the sake of the plot, focus on somebody else dealing with the situation. It's hard to describe how that helps but it did for me.

My name is darthnazgul and TV Tropes has ruined my life.

Avoiding a Goku clone

The easiest way is simply upping the characters Intelligence stat. Shounen heroes all follow the Goku mold where the main character is as dumb as a sack of hammers. Defy that and you defy the "Goku clone".
