How much money do you have, your exact address where you will be staying, who are you staying with, how long have you known them, how did you meet, where are you from back home, do you intend to drive (just say no), how are you leaving the airport, does your home country know you're gone...
Yeah. They will get all up I'm your business. And if you don't have an answer they will hold your ass for as long as they feel.
I couldn't give the exact hall where I would be staying. (I had come to spend two weeks in a gallery by invitation.) That freaked them out. I had to call my sponser who was waiting at the end of the ramp and beg them to work it out for me.
To be fair, I am a naturalised Irish American, so I don't know if that may have influenced anything. I was also wearing a headscarf because I didn't want to mess with my hair. I was held 6 hours. Though after it all they gave me a six month visa even though I was only going to be there two weeks.

I wonder if they would be alarmed if told the truth and said that I will staying with my girlfriend who I met on an online forum back in October/November.

Not alarmed. Just have to tell them exactly that. You'll be fine. 
If you plan to go to Disneyland while in California, be prepared to wait in line for a long time. There are 7 billion people on the planet and at any give moment half of them are at Disneyland. You can wait three hours for Pirates of the Caribbean.
