[up] That was one of my plot hole problems with Grisha, which I just waved it off as "cause this is a shonen so main protag has to be kid".

The latest chapters were filling in the Grisha-related plot holes, so inner nitpicker was happy. But latest chapter made inner nitpicker unhappy because if things are that desperate, you do what you can to save the last group of the resistance, not just The Chosen One.

This chapter basically has me torn between over reliance of The Chosen One trope vs "oh that is a very interesting albeit horrifying take on the Avatar concept.

[up] My understanding was that this wsn't so much saving only The Chosen One so much as only the chosen one could be saved. Kruger believed it was impossible to reach the walls without the power of the Titans, so those folks were doomed no matter what. Best he could do was keep Grisha from getting killed.

[up] So, he rather had one of them being eaten alive? With the others being forced into being mindless Titans?

Also, there weren't that many of them left. If Grisha-Titan couldn't carry them, make a sleigh or a cart. Was it even necessary to destroy the boat?

Yeah, I get that these become those particular Titans, but that could also been handled with a bit more dignity. Like rescuing them before they were lead up the wall, explaining to them and then letting them decide whether to die or become one of them mindless Titans.

There's also the immense psychological pressure that Kruger just dumped on Grisha. That would had been a lot easier to take if he wasn't the only one left.

Grisha wouldn't have been able to take them with him. Not only is he not experience with the titan power he just got and has no fighting experience, but titan shifters already attract titans and with all the extra people he would have been a sitting duck since he could keep them safe and fight.

[up] If you have people to protect, adrenaline goes up.

There's also the question of the boat. Plus, really - if you want to fight against an Evil Empire, the more people the better.

omg, this is even making me consider that people may be psychologically handicapping themselves by investing too much wishfulfillment in the Chosen One trope.

Dammit, I was already more or less relaxed about this series.

[up]What does that matter? Grisha can only carry so many people on his titans back. And they need to be able to hold on while he is fighting tons of titans that are being draw to him and all the people he is holding while he is not a fighter.

[up] He doesn't have to carry. You can juryrig sleds from too many things. They also had a boat.

Basically, Kruger just put all the eggs in one basket AND expected that Grisha can solo-complete in a foreign country. No wonder the poor guy just cracked up in that scene where he confronted the Reiss Family.

Basically, for me, it was just too much Chosen One & The Only One plus Red Shirts & Kick the Dog. I'd probably be more "eyeroll" and less "frustration" if this chapter didn't include that imho - very interesting take on reincarnation and Avatar.

Spoilers for latest chapter.

So I guess precog or some sort of time travel is a thing in this universe.

Or Eren's memories are getting muddled and he'll be able to sort of speak to Grisha in his head.

Probably a case of "Hanji is bullshitting, everyone knows Hanji is bullshitting, but they're playing along because they figure they can squeeze it out of Eren afterwards rather than now".

Mikasa really took the news of Eren's limited lifespan hard, I see.

The idea that Eren gained control of the power by coming into contact with the Dina titan is morbidly brilliant. That makes it one hell of a coincidence, though...

[up]A coincidence that Eren met the Smiling Titan again or that the Smiling Titan was Dina to begin with?

Err… wait… If he could use the OT's power just by touching Dina, then why does he thinks he has to eat Historia for it to work?

That final scene is a headache to interpret. =.=

Also, Historia's reaction to Ymir's letter (and the fact she has little chance of being alive) is surprisingly… deadpan. I know she has to keep some regal dignity, but still, she seemed to hardly even care.

Someone on Reddit said it was a mistranslation and Eren is concerned that the military might force Historia to become a Titan if that's needed for him to use the coordinate.

I personally think that the Smiling Titan was attracted to Grisha or, failing that, sensing places he had been or people he was connected to, like blood relatives. So to me, knowing what I do now, the Smiling Titan's presence at both events is no coincidence.

Also, less morally gray way around the possibility of eating Historian: eat Zeke.

Hmm… The raw says "Ouke no chi wo hiku mono wo kyojin ni shite ore ga sesshu sureba… 'Shiso no Kyojin' no chikara ga tsukaeru… kamoshirenai..."

I'm not sure he talks about turning Historia into a titan, but he definitely talks about consuming her.

[down] Ooooooh. That makes a lot more sense. And this, folks, is what volume releases are for. tongue
