Join Us Saturday, October 12th @ ~8:00PM (US/EDT) Here: http://cytu.be/r/TroperCoven

For the uninitiated... A contingent of tropers (mostly from across America) holds regular get-togethers over the Interwebs on this site called Synchtube which lets individuals, such as ourselves, open and join in text-based chatrooms within typical web browsers (Firefox, Chrome, et. al.) that allow the chat participants to view YouTube videos in synchronization with everyone else present (without even needing to set up an account)... and we've decided to use said chatrooms to play cheeseball webvideos and feature-length movies found in the public domain which stretch all the way from letters B to Z, which everyone subsequently riffs on a la MST3K.

For over EIGHT years, everybody who gets involved mostly finds good enjoymentnote  in calling out tropes that are recognized in the videos and stories and coming up with jokes to fling back at whatever's happening on the screen, many of which turn into various in-jokes and running gags (a Coven Glossary is kept and maintained for everyone's help and convenience HERE) to repeat in the chat.

We're always looking for new ways to better coordinate and expand our activities and are more than happy to welcome newcomers interested in joining our gatherings.

Okay...

So earlier this month, we've seen Patrick Star as a mummy. Now... How about Mr. Krabs as Frankenstein's monster?

In my humble opinion, The Bride is a fairly decent adaptation of The Bride of Frankenstein, and while the trailer ([up]above) focuses heavily on the screen relationship between Sting as a fairly young Dr. Frankenstein and Jennifer Beals as his re-animated corpse bride, the REAL stars of the show are Clancy Brown as the monster and the scene-stealing David Rappaport (who you may remember as Randall from Terry Gilliam's Time Bandits). Those two are NOT a pair to miss.

Again, trailer can be found in the [up]Header Post.

NOTE: This movie runs a bit longer than most, so certainly anticipate a start time tonight shortly after 7:30 PM (EDT), if you plan on catching this.

Alright, after a quick showing of Are You Afraid of the Dark? (tonight's episode being being a true classic), we got Sting, Jennifer Beals, David Rappaport, Mr. Krabs, and more together in The Bride.

Again, tonight's feature presentation is beginning just after 7:30 PM (EDT).

It's nice to see a genuinely good movie from time to time. However, I didn't really find it riffable. Enjoyable, but not really riffable.

I was one of those who gave it ★★★. Disappointed that it got ★★.

I think the best movies are either:

  • So bad they're hilarious (e.g. Creating Rem Lezar, Garzey's Wing)
  • Endlessly stupid fun (e.g. Undefeatable)
  • Genuinely well-made but with corny elements that are riffable (e.g. Galaxy Express 999, and what we just saw)
  • Classics from our childhood that, in hindsight, are corny (e.g. 3 Ninjas, A Kid in King Arthur's Court)

Those are the ones I tend to rate highest, and which I see get the highest ratings.

Yeah, I rate stuff based on how much fun it was, mostly from riffing, but also from action and bits that were intentionally funny.

EDIT: What I saw of The Bride seemed like a decent story, but not exactly fun, and it felt like a lot of it might have been a bit telegraphed.

yeah i think the bride hits that uncomfortable zone where its not bad enough to be funny but not really that good either. i liked the dwarf and victor (i messed up and wrote frankenstein here) wandering around, but they werent the focus of the movie and the two leads were super boring. and it really felt its length at 2 hours

in this critics (heh) opinion

Yeah, I figured the likability David Rappaport would draw (and he surely drew likability) would be enough to justify showing that movie.

In other news, we'll be foregoing Kung Fu Friday to focus more on horror and Halloween movies for the remainder of the month of October, and tonight we're in for a hell of a... Eh, let's just leave it at "We're in for hell."

Before Jason X (but after Hellraiser IV: Bloodline), Warwick Davis's killer Leprechaun character graduated from harassing a young Jennifer Aniston to terrorizing Las Vegas and on to... being in outer space.

There's not much more to say than that, and I'm gonna need a moment to get over the fact that I've already managed to name THREE long-running horror franchises that include installments set in goddamn spaceships. Suffice to say, though, this outer space horror flick is the one that can boast the lowest rating on Rotten Tomatoes (a whopping 0% out of a paltry 6 reviews) and is, arguably, the stupidest of the three.

So there you have it... Leprechaun 4: In Space. All for you.

Just from the trailer it looked like stupid fun. I stopped watching the trailer at one point to avoid spoilers. I'd rather see all the stupid for myself.

[up][up]For your sake, I hope you stopped soon after the shot of the Leprechaun having borrowed Yoda's lightsaber. One particular moment that they show there is so far beyond ridiculous... Just wait until you find out the full context for yourself.

[up]Yep, Mr. Davis played the character in six films. EDIT: And Wikipedia tells me that there's been a series reboot released this very year that was produced by WWE Studios and stars Hornswoggle as the Leprechaun. Fancy that.

I like the subtitle. "It's a leprechaun, it's in space, there's our title."

"Monsters are tragic beings. They are born too tall, too strong, too heavy. They are not evil by choice. That is their tragedy."

Any chance anyone can find Leprechaun 6: Back to the Hood?

[up][up]I agree with that. Birdemic wasn't self-aware. A new producer insisted on jokes and things being put into the sequel, that made it stop being fun to watch.

It got a 2, and I suppose deserved it (I gave it the only 3). :/ It had a few genuinely funny lines, but IMO, none of them were given to the Leprechaun.

Also, probably 40% of the movie felt like a Big-Lipped Alligator Moment, it got so weird in places; but never really random, oddly enough.

EDIT: Leprechaun in the Hood is on for tomorrow night.

In other news... I have another suggestion. The 1987 TV film The Worst Witch is on You Tube. In full. To show why we have to see this:
