So will Modern Masters 2 get a pre-release event or something? I'm interested in trying out Modern but the price is putting me off.
I'm pretty sure there's no official Wot C one. Your LGS may host something, but that's up to the individual stores.
Drafting MMA is an awful way to get into Modern. Buying singles will be inevitably cheaper.
But you should definitely try Modern! It's a ton of fun and easily my favorite format (even over Legacy).
I'd say the vast majority of my decks are Modern. But they're Modern decks in the sense of "they abide by the set and banlist restrictions" rather than being competitive. A lot of them started out as Standard decks, which I converted to Modern when their main themes rotated out. My Red/Green Eldrazi deck is just one example.
I'm still looking forward to this, though. I'd say Modern's my favorite format overall. I like to think of it as Magic with neither the rotations of Standard nor the Game Breaking Early-Installment Weirdness of Legacy; the best of both worlds. The first Modern Masters was the first set I ever bought a box of. I'm not sure if that will be feasible this time thanks to the higher MSRP per pack, though, but it's something I'm considering.
Also, Jon Finkel's opinion on the card he himself created got a chuckle out of me:

The Living Guildpact rules that coffee is an acceptable substitution for rest as specified in subsection … whatever. At least his card is better than Rootwater Thief and Sylvan Safekeeper, so it could be worse. Those dont even show up in cubes.

Gotta admit, reprinting a card explicitly so that people have copies they can ask the designer to sign is one of the more unique reasons to have a new copy in a set.
Jon's not listed as being on either the design team or the development team, so I don't think he meant that seriously.
The Living Guildpact rules that coffee is an acceptable substitution for rest as specified in subsection … whatever.@Funden Oh, no, I mean in terms of getting some experience playing the format and finding out what I like. I'm aware that buying singles is the best way to get a deck together.
The problem is that MMA draft is nowhere close to actual Modern. None of the archetypes have come close to any Modern deck so far, and just playing with the cards isn't the same.
My advice is to watch some coverage and proxy a deck that you like. It's a much easier way to learn the decks and meta.
Announcing Duel Decks: Zendikar vs Eldrazi!
Also, apparently White/Black's draft archetype is spirits. This might give me the motivation to build this Esper spirits deck that's been floating in my head for years now. I first got the idea during Innistrad block (where spirits were White/Blue), but didn't do so because my main deck was already White/Blue.
I'm keeping my mind occupied with trying to figure out what archetypes are going to which color pair. We've got a few answers, but not all of them yet.
- White/Blue: Metalcraft
- Blue/Black: ?
- Black/Red: Aggro
- Red/Green: Eldrazi (maybe?)
- Green/White: Tokens
- White/Black: Spirits
- Blue/Red: Elementals
- Black/Green: Sacrifice
- Red/White: ?
- Green/Blue: ?
Red/White is proooobably soldiers. Maybe warriors. Boros sets a precedent.
月を見るたび思い出せI thought Eldrazi were colourless. Why would they be R/G?
Red/White is Soldiers, as Dragons of Tarkir's white is already Warriors (Secure the Wastes, Herald of Dromoka, Arashin Foremost) and by extension the Abzan (through white) and Mardu (through black) prior to that...

I'm reading this because it's interesting. I think. Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot, over. While the main Eldrazi are colorless, they had spawn-producing cards and "drones" in those two colors (and a few in Black). And if you're planning on hard-casting one, you're definitely going to need green's ramping to do it.

The Living Guildpact rules that coffee is an acceptable substitution for rest as specified in subsection … whatever.More accurate term than Red/Green Eldrazi would be Red/Green Ramp to Eldrazi. Which, as said above, largely involves red and green cards which produce Eldrazi Spawn with the "Sac to add 1 to your mana pool" ability.
And, of course, classic Green ramp stuff.
So Scion of the Wilds is being downshifted to common. I can definitely see Red/Green Eldrazi with a Spawn focus being an archetype.
I'm not seeing much I want from the set. I might get a few singles but not a whole box...
Ditto. Might be fun to gamble for eldrazi, Karn, or Bob, but I'll probably just buy a handful of boosters over a long period of time like I did with the first Modern Masters.
月を見るたび思い出せPlaces near me are massively marking up from the MSRP. Too expensive to play the Eldrazi lottery....not enough good rares to make it worthwhile.

Heh, curiously, the other day the guy at the counter in my LGS was telling me they had the lowest price for a box in all of Europe. I think it was around 205€ or something?
I don't think I'll be able to buy one though.

They call it the Rumour Mill because every time one specific guy posts I definitely feel cards going from my library to my graveyardMy store has boosters at $16 each and $380 a box (AUD)... I won't be getting any.
Also, last night I tied for first place in FNM for the second time. The prize structure for my store gives $50 store credit for 1st place and $30 store credit for 2nd place, but if two people tie for first place they can either play off or split. I've split both times because at that stage it just feels like playing some one can take $10 off the other.
I do want to win an FNM outright, though. I can't really feel I can say I've won an FNM yet.
Congrats! What were you playing?
Thanks! My Temur mid-range that I've had since Khans was released. I'm still enjoying it after all this time, and so I haven't made any new decks. Well, the other reason is that most things I'd want to play with right now are rotating out.
I also saw a 5 colour Dragon deck that night that was really cool.

Certainly a better art update than they did for Dark Confidant.
