Cleanup: Hottip Markup:

PROJECT COMPLETE

Due to (somewhat) recent changes to the source code and text parser, the hottip no longer works as it used to. Specifically, the text parser does not distinguish between the end of a pothole and the end of a hottip.

Therefore, I am creating this thread to clean up hottip markup in the wiki, and do one of the following:

  1. Remove the hottip and weave the explanation into the description.
  2. Replace the hottip with either the note or labelnote markup, as appropriate.

Syntax for a note markup is (for those who are unaware):

[[note]]-text to be revealed-[[/note]], which yields: note

Syntax for a labelnote is: [[labelnote:-text to be displayed-]]-text to be revealed-[[/labelnote]], which yields:

-text to be displayed-

Being able to retire the hottip markup is a thing greatly to be desired. I'll see if I can come up with a list of places where it is being used.
Goal: Clear, Concise and Witty
Also, I would like to create a page for Notes and Labelnotes, and after we get that page in, I'd like to have Hottip cut, as it's no longer relevant.

Here's the usage list.

Methinks we also need to zap all the hottips that were used for off-topic, review-y and otherwise doesn't-belong-there stuff?

[up] I'd say so.

Also, I have the sandbox:

Sandbox.Notes And Labelnotes

Holy crap, that's a long list of pages. O.O

Any ideas on how to best organize this so that we can keep track of what has and has not been done, to prevent duplication of effort and a lot of needless clicking?

And [up], I think the sandbox looks fine.

How would we convert that to a wiki page?
Given that we already have a page on hottips here, I was just proposing to swap the two out.

Seeking for Light
[up] I think Willbyr was asking if there was a way to convert the list to a wiki page, without involving hand-copying everything.

That makes sense - I apologize for the misunderstanding.

Gonna quote myself from another thread on this:

Will the thread be about just replacing broken hottips with links and stuff in them? surprised

Ah. I misunderstood your question from the other thread. I apologize.

I believe the goal is to completely eradicate the hottip markup and replace it.

Oh ok. sad
Alt account of Angeldog 2437.
I'm sorry. Please don't be sad. :)

In any case, I don't think we can do anything until we first figure out a way to organize this effort.

Yeah, you'll need either lots of people or lots of time. surprised

Also double posting from the other thread:

Starting with the meme pages would probably work best. Not only are they almost certainly correct and in more dire need of fixing, they're more visible, so more people will become aware of the change.

If nobody else is working on making a wiki page from the list, I'll hack up something after lunch.

Edit: See Hottip Cleanup for the list of pages. The link is a list of sub pages - there are so many pages to clean up that I split it alphabetically.

Edit: Should I split out the Meme pages?

[up] Wow. That must have been a lot of work to get those up. Thank you.

In fact, it took all of ten minutes; I still have the perl script lying around if anyone's interested.

Edit: I'll start working on Q (it's short and sweet).

In uffish thought
That script could be useful the next time Eddie gives us a list in the Big Page Lock thread, since the list is in the same format. It'd save having to copy and paste/type out every link, especially when they've already been dealt with.

I'll upload the script as soon as I'm finished fixing the Q pages, and post usage instructions.

By the way, if a hottip appears in a !! headline, switching it to note makes it look ridiculous to me; labelnote:* looks way better.

Edit: Q is done.

The script I mentioned above can be found here. I tested it on Debian Linux, but it should work on every system that has Perl installed. Usage:

1. Download the pages list and save on disk.
2. Call the script like this: perl pagelist2wikipages <prefix> <filename>.

This gives you a number of files called prefixA to prefixZ, which contain the wicks for all pages in the list that start with the given letter. The wicks are sorted alphabetically with regard to the page name; if more than one wick with a given page exists, these pages are then sorted alphabetically according to namespace. As a last step, create wiki pages and copy the context into them; just open each created file in a text editor and use copy&paste (I didn't automate this because I am too lazy to try and work around the wiki's protection system, and it's just at most 26 pages anyway).

Example: I downloaded the list for the hottip pages into hottips.html. Then I called the script as follows:
perl pagelist2wikipages HottipCleanup hottip.html

This generated 26 text files names HottipCleanupA to HottipCleanupZ.

Edit: Did X as well.

I SAID HEY!
Well, crap. Gotta find a way to redo my trope page then, since the labelnote markup doesn't show up the same way as the hottip markup does. Oh well. I'll make it work.

Also, jkbeta, you might wanna link back to this thread in your edit reasons so that people can know what's going on.

What's going on?
Conanian and Hirokian
I have noticed that spoiler tags and comment tags no longer work when associated with a note or labelnote tag. Is that normal?

You need to have the note/labelnote around the spoiler, not the other way 'round (educated guess).
