Mainly because it is not as cartoony as the original manga or the 2001 anime

You mean stylized (lets be frank here, Ishinomori's designs are a big draw). Which the movie (especially with the CGI — what the heck is going on with Ivan/001?) isn't.

I'd be disappointed if this didn't remind me of the different art in Pluto compared to Astro Boy. I'm not expecting Pluto level story-telling, though. I'll give this a fair trial at the very least.

Out of curiosity, I checked out the oringinal manga (I only watched the 2001 tv series) and I realised how different it was to the 2001 tv series
