Prettier version of this post.

Issue 9:

Haikyuu!! (Cover, Lead Colour)
1. My Hero Academia
2. One Piece
3. Assassination Classroom
4. Hinomaru Zumō
5. Food Wars!: Shokugeki no Soma
6. World Trigger
Tenjō no Aruwando (Center Colour, One-Shot)
7. PSI Kusuo Saiki
Gakkyu Hotei: School Judgment (Center Colour, Chapter 7)
8. Gin Tama
9. Toriko
10. Takujo no AGEHA: The Table Tennis of AGEHA
11. Nisekoi: False Love
12. Kochikame
13. E-ROBOT (First Ranking)
14. Bleach
15. Isobe Isobee Monogatari
16. Sporting Salt
Hi-Fi CLUSTER (Final Chapter)

E-ROBOT starts off at a rather poor 13th while AGEHA continues to narrowly-avoid the bottom 5. Not a good position for either to be in (though AGEHA is almost in the middle, so it’s fairly safe), but even less enviable is Nisekoi's 6th-from-the-bottom position, though it's safe from immediate cancellation at this point in my honest opinion.

Haikyuu!!'s anime's first season is getting a compilation movie.

Still no word on new series.

Issue 10 Info:
Cover, Lead Colour: One Piece
Center Colour: Assassination Classroom, ēlDLIVE (Special Chapter), a one-shot

English Issue 8:
One-Punch Man (Cover, 1.5 Chapters)
Nisekoi: False Love (Center Colour)
One Piece
Food Wars!: Shokugeki no Soma
World Trigger
Toriko
Gakkyu Hotei: School Judgment
Hi-Fi CLUSTER
Rosario + Vampire (Jump Back)

New promo card poll.

The magazine is now free until February 15th.

This week’s Nihongo Lesson focuses on Rosario + Vampire: ningen, yokai and kyuketsuki.

E Robot was worthless anyway. I hardly knew ye.

Bn HA still going pretty strong. It looks like people love tournament arcs. I dont really care about the current arc, but good for it.

It's important to remember that the rank is for 7~8 chapters ago. We don't know how people will vote in regards to the tournament yet.

So people are essentially voting for chapters 16-17 then? Those chapters are pretty cool, especially the end of chapter 15.

What the heck happened to Isobe Isobee Monogatari? Did it run out of steam? Seemed like such a promising thing. E-Robot doing better than Bleach in the rankings is absolutely hilarious. How unfortunate that Bleach can't be cancelled the same way E-Robot will be, though. But the current Bleach Arc really does not deserve to be anything but a bottom-feeder in the ranks.

Aw yiss! This means we'll soon be getting English volumes as well, right? They did do that for Barrage.

Hi-Fi Cluster's ending was underwhelming.

School Judgement is pushing G-Rated Drug to the limit, I think.

Issue 10:

One Piece (Cover, Lead Colour)
1. My Hero Academia
2. Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma
3. Toriko
4. PSI Kusuo Saiki
Assassination Classroom (Center Colour)
5. Haikyuu!!
6. Gakkyu Hotei: School Judgment (First Ranking)
7. Hinomaru Zumō
8. Bleach
Onigoroki (Center Colour, One-Shot)
9. Kochikame
ēlDLIVE (Center Colour, Special Chapter)
10. Nisekoi: False Love
11. Gin Tama
12. Takujo no AGEHA: The Table Tennis of AGEHA
13. World Trigger
14. Isobe Isobee Monogatari
15. E-ROBOT
Sporting Salt (Final Chapter)

School Judgment debuts high, but not as high as I expected, to be honest. Still, definitely not a failure at present. On the other hand, E-ROBOT may find itself cancelled next week (see below) and Ageha has finally dropped into the bottom 5.

As expected, nobody from the previous batch lived.

The final volume of Naruto contains some manner of secret. At least, that's what the dust cover of said volume claims.

Issue 11:
Cover, Lead Colour: Kagamigami (New Series)
Center Colour: My Hero Academia, Karada Sagashide (One-Shot)
Absent: One Piece

Kagamigami (lit. "Mirror God") is by Toshiaki Iwashiro (PSYЯEN).

Four series will be starting. The rest are, in order:

  • Black Clover by Yūki Tabata (Hungry Joker)
  • Kaizō Ningen Rogy ("Cyborg Rogy") by Yū Miki (newcomer)
  • Ultra Battle Satellite by Yūsuke Utsumi (Gado-den)

They may or may not choose to cancel E-ROBOT next week to keep the count at 20. It's not unprecedented for them to have 21 running.

English Issue 9:
Nisekoi: False Love (Cover)
One Piece
Gakkyu Hotei: School Judgment (Center Colour)
Toriko
World Trigger
Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma
Bleach
Hi-Fi CLUSTER (Final Chapter)
Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL
Rosario+Vampire (Jump Back)

My Hero Academia will run chapter 1 next issue and join the line-up in full with issue 11.

This week's Nihongo Lesson is about Jump's motto and common themes: "yuujo", "doryoku", "shouri".

Keep in mind that the current top three is going to be due in part to One Piece and Ansatsu Kyoushitsu not being ranked

Also don't they normally give new series a chance to improve before cancelling them? I was thinking that Isobe Isobee Monogatari would be the one to go

It depends on the editors' reading of the survey results, if we believe Bakuman。 if there's a strong but niche audience that's putting the new series as their third choice, there's a chance to capture a larger piece of the vote. If the series is completely tanking, or there doesn't seem to be any way to fix the structural problems, the plug will be pulled.

[up][up][up] Uh, very much more popular? It's only been in publication for just over half a year. If it is this popular this early then that means it will inevitably become way more popular than it is right now.(assuming it doesn't completely go down the drain due to sudden terrible writing or something)

Volume sales are still "just" about 160K for the first week. It's not like it has already managed to reach the same readership level and general popularity as its senior competitors in the industry (or even the same magazine) enjoys. And who knows about when it gets an anime? Ao T was decently popular in Japan before the anime, but afterwards it exploded in worldwide popularity. Not that I'm expecting that level of attention, but it probably will rise even more then if the studio that gets it does it justice.(I'm rooting for Madhouse)

[up][up][up]We've seen many series stop at 10 or so chapters over the years due to being lost causes. We just see it less nowadays because usually some other poor performer is acting as a cushion.

The only real protections I've seen (other than simply good performance) are an ongoing anime and "Are we still unable to fill a volume 1 of this?".

What are the volume sales for Hinomaru Zumo like? I feel like this series is walking a fine line between keeping people's interest, and complete failure.

Volume 1 sold about 20K, volume 2 sole about 29K. Any other magazine, and this would have been decent sales, but there are many cancelled series that sold better than that. It lives on rankings alone.

Looks like we have Shueisha's answer to what'll happen now that we have 4 new series incoming.

Isobee will no longer run two chapters every issue. It will instead run one slightly longer chapter at the back of the magazine. For those who've forgotten my explanation of this, Isobee actually had two chapters per issue, but the second one is always at the end no matter what so I've been omitting it.

Overall, the series loses 3 pages and we won't have ranks for it anymore.

[up]So wait, if Isobee's not getting ranked anymore, does that mean it has the same immunity/potential longevity Kochikame has?

Also, late response, but it's nice to see the writers for Psyren and Hungry Joker come back for another round. Both of those were pretty good, though it was clear early on that HJ was hurrying its way to cancellation. Hopefully Kagamigami can get the love in Japan that Psyren never got, and ''Black Clover" can actually last.

And so long to Sporting Salt, not like anyone's really gonna miss it. And E-ROBOT looks ready to follow.

Not quite. From my understanding, Jump has an infrequent but dedicated gag manga slot at the back of the magazine. These run short chapters (~7 pages) meant to act as filler to round out the magazine. You're correct in thinking that standard cancellation logic doesn't apply to these series, since they're not meant to be hits. They just seem to end whenever the editorial department feels like it.

Apparently, a recent example of this sort of series is Pyu to Fuku! Jaguar, which ran from 2000 to 2010, spanning 20 volumes.

[up][up]Huh, did not realize Jaguar counted as such. I know it had short chapters, but I thought it was just that nature of it being a gag manga. Kinnikuman's chapters were similarly short before Cerberus Syndrome hit.

Anyway, Gakkyu Hotei looks like it's starting to drop. With E-ROBOT and Ageha it has a buffer, but it's still a bit nerve-wracking how it will continue to handle.

Curious how the new series will turn out. With Psyren and HJ's niche American audiences I have no doubt some scanlator's going to give them a crack, but the other two also seem interesting.

I think it's more interesting that Hinomaru Zumo is #5 on that list.

Say what you will about its sales, but it's clearly got some good amount of popularity power backing it.
