Best part is Squirrel Girl beside Doom. She's all, "Hey, Vic! Long time no see! What's new with you? I've got my own comic now but that's NBD. Oh, and I hung out with Galactus, did you know he's actually really cool? And oh hey! You're going to be the villain of the next arc of my comic! Isn't that great?" And Doom's all, "Huuuuh."

That's also a classy-looking Emma. I like her. And Thanos is all, "Hey, wassup my bitches!" And I just decided I like Crystal's new haircut. It's really cute, at least as this guy does it. I like the goggles on his version of the Wasp costume. Something about the goggles and hair is really cute. I love that he drew Paste-Pot Pete. Not the Trapster, but Paste-Pot Pete. I love Paste-Pot Pete. I'm not sure who the turtle is supposed to be. Scarlet Witch looks stylin'.

So, yeah, that's pretty cool.

Ah, so it's a Golden Age thing. That explains why I've never heard of him. I find most Golden Age comics are painful to look at. Though I found Nelvana of the Northern Lights to actually be pretty high-quality. (Also, I want someone to start making new Nelvana of the Northern Lights comics. That's not Marvel-related, but she's a great character with an interesting hook and the potential for some amazing stories. It's just a matter of some publisher licensing the rights from Dingle's estate. Someone must be able to do it.)

You know, Frog-Man needs a mini-series. The turtle can be one of the foes he fights. Oh man! Brilliant idea! Best idea ever! An issue where Frog-Man is sent back in time to that issue of Captain America and helps Cap and Bucky fight the turtle guy! Yes! Yes! I want to see this story so much. I really do. It would be amazing.

Turtle Man is also a Flash villain, though he is merely a man in a turtle costume who has the power of slowness.

So is Secret Wars Doom the most powerful non-One Above All being ever featured in Marvel? He apparently beat the Beyonders, who apparently beat the Tribunal...

Weren't the Beyonders actually beaten by dozens or hundreds of Molecule Men being used as bombs against them?

Does this mean "Doom with prep time" should replace the "Batman with prep time " meme?

The Onion's AV Club on the current X-Direction.

I gotta say, they did a really good job summing up what's currently leading us into this direction. And while I did like Bendis's run overall, I do have to say that Uncanny ran out of steam towards the end but I think a major reason that Matthew Malloy story was lengthened was due to him not wanting to participate in AXIS or Time Runs Out. The comment sections points that out, and also points out that Remender was supposed to take over before he got burned out. I have to wonder if Uncanny #600 was delayed just due to the fact there were no tie-ins at all the Secret Wars.

Either way, I just hope this Extraordinary series works out because already it not re-igniting fan interest and it's so weird that the terrigen is a big part of Extraordinary, but so far All-New Wolverine ignores it, and it's not really brought up in Uncanny Avengers and All-New X-Men looks like they'll be dealing with it sparingly.

I'm inclined to agree. I especially agree with the observation - which I've seen in plenty of places - that Morrison's New X-Men was simply too good. It was truly revolutionary, and brilliant, and the franchise has spent the past decade running away from it. Some genies couldn't be put back in the bottle - in particular, getting the hell rid of the whole idea of the X-Men having secret identities and the school hiding what it is - but for the most part, the franchise has done a complete 180.

And I think that's what's hurting the franchise, more than anything. Morrison made the minority metaphor a lot more real, and in the process, showed the true potential of what the X-Men franchise can do. But Marvel's leaped away from that, to bring it back to an older - and far less realistic and authentic - take.

The X-Men franchise is in a state of "been there done that." It's stopped truly evolving. Bendis tried, but ultimately, the problem there was simply his decompressed style got in his way.

You know what I'd actually be inclined to do? Wait to see how Ta-Nehisi Coates' Black Panther run is received, and if it's critically successful, then in a year or so, put him on Uncanny X-Men. Give him control of the franchise, with the specific mandate of bringing his experiences with minority issues to the franchise. Put G. Willow Wilson on a teen X-Men title, with a similar mandate but a bit looser and lighter. And then a couple other X-titles that are more doing their own thing.

But get back to the minority metaphor. Push it in an authentic way.

And for the love of Odin, enough of things that have the mutant race dying out and on a course for extinction. No more of that shit. Stop it, Marvel. Stop. Stop. It's stupid.

With regards to Extraordinary X-Men...

You know, I think, if you wanted to, you could use the near-constant boom-and-bust cycle of mutant rights to make a rather good argument about the inherent flaws of the "infinite shared universe" system itself.

I mean, if you wanted to.

Which I don't right now.

Morrison's run even had metacommentary on how goddamn cyclical everything that happens to the X-Men is. Xavier's dead. Now he's not! Jean's dead. Now she's not! Magneto is a good guy. No wait he's bad again! Xavier's legs are healed. No wait, he's back in the wheelchair again!
