I just put down Impact Silhouette as an option. Even if the term doesn't mean that exactly, the form is the same.

I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.

@99 Being too broad is better than being too narrow, because you get examples left out that way, as opposed to just having to police the trope for misuse like we do with any other.

And my argument is that the few actually good names on the list are equally as broad in their name as Efficient Displacement. In which case, whatever problem may exist isn't being solved at all.

I like Impact Silhouette. Though I prefer my Whatever-Shaped Hole.

Instead, I have learned a horrible truth of existence...some stories have no meaning.

"Being too broad is better than being too narrow, because you get examples left out that way, as opposed to just having to police the trope for misuse like we do with any other."

How is allowing bad examples and wicks better? That doesn't make sense. BOTH are bad, and NEITHER should get preference.

With Coyote Shaped Hole, nobody is going to think the trope is restricted to coyotes because come on, they're not idiots. So people aren't gonna get misled because that one is too narrow. The problem area is when the title is narrow enough that it sounds like it should be a subtrope of itself, which is a problem we've seen on stuff like Sword In The Stone or...whatever. Sometimes a narrow name is worse than a broad one, and sometimes it isn't—you've got to use your judgement.

Does anyone else think Character Shaped Hole sounds kind of like it could be referring to Replacement Flat Character?

Rhymes with "Protracted."

No, but I see what you mean about the hole maybe not being a character. (An anvil, say.) Prefer ends of the specificity spectrum (Coyote-Shaped or Whatever-Shaped) to the generic boring middle.

@87: It's not a strawman if it's accurate to how I see it, without exaggerations.

That said, Impact Silhouette is actually what I would rename it to, if I had to choose. I'd even planned on suggesting it once the crowner was called. And a few others, like Silhouette Hole, but I think the impact bit is more important to the trope.

The Internet misuses, abuses, and overuses everything.

Can we call this for Impact Silhouette?

Or should we have a runoff against Character-Shaped Hole?

Calling this in favor of the leader. Make it so.

Let's see. New page is up. Discussion moved, Playing With subpage is moved, redirects are moved, indices are moved. Current page is now a redirect, and if anyone wants to help me with the hundred wicks, that would be great. Otherwise, I think I've got this, and I'll send for a lock when I finish the wick migration.

Referring to the 1st post (which I started):

  • 1. Done. New name is not ambiguous.
  • 2. Done

  • I'm happy.

  • New page created and typed
  • New page indexed
  • Old page is now a redirect
  • Discussion is moved
  • Playing With subpage moved, old subpage cutlisted after move
  • Wicks moved

I think that's about all I can do here. It's nice to do something useful.

Is there something that I've completely neglected to do?

Turning Character Shaped Hole into a redirect.

[up]Renamed Tropes and the FAQ thread of the same name. Also, a note on the discussion page (including links to old discussion and YKTTW if they aren't already here).

Done. Discussion is moved and we don't appear to have a YKTTW for this that I can find...

[up]The next task for me would be to add it to my troper page under "pages moved" and then to request locking.

I requested locking last night and no one did anything. :/

[up]You'll have to wait. Lately, I've noticed that holler replies are becoming scant.

Holler responses are not becoming scant, Septimus. You are simply increasingly hollering things too soon and in too large numbers. As a result, you are getting no action on an increasing number of your hollers. Valid hollers will always be answered as soon as a moderator can get to it.
