Well I'm the last person to have posted and I dislike double posting. Plus I'm kinda waiting on a response from SOCR.

On a more random note, I keep wanting to pronounce SOCR's screenname as "soccer". Is that weird?

So I've given it over a week, and it looks bleak. I'm going to say that this current RP is dead.

Buuuuuut, you know, we could reboot it. We only went halfway through one mission, so we could talk about what was wrong with the first RP, use a sledgehammer to fix those problems, and then launch Warwalker: Genesis. I want to make it so that anyone who's still actually here*

would be able to more-or-less just copy/paste their character into the new thread.

I mean, I spent hours looking up armor penetration tables, weapon details, vehicle information, and I even busted out my calculator to calculate some good old Newtonian kinetic energy. I don't want that to go to waste. Also, because of that, there's probably an unmarked black van outside my house, monitoring my conversations. [lol]

Well, I got my sledgehammer ready, I just need to know what needs to be ironed for a smoother experience this time around.

I'm still interested. I've just been busy with work and other real life distractions. Especially this week.

And hey, to be fair, my post is still the last post in the main thread. Don't look at me for blame on this going down.

Oh, and as a suggestion? I'd start with something besides a mission this time around if we reboot. It gives us time to establish our characters, how they interact with each other, and lets those who are only a bit late jump in right away.

Oh, I wasn't blaming you. I was blaming SOCR and Insano. But also, I blame myself for starting this thing with only six people. This is TV Tropes, after all, where if twenty percent of your players are still there after a week, you can count yourself lucky.[lol] So yeah... back to that sledgehammer.

And yeah, I agree about starting with talk instead of a mission. I think I'll blame... hmmm... Stormthorn for that. Yeah. evil grin

Yeah, SPES

is a pretty common thing among these forums from what I've seen. In my own RP I think I've accepted almost 20 people. I currently have about 4 players. tongue

Huh... exactly twenty percenttongue

Also, I was thinking that, this time around, while I'd like to keep things still pretty freeform, I'd like to also use something a bit systemic for combat to keep things less... insane... especially if we have like ten people playing at once. For example, Faux's Code Geass RP uses a sort-of dice-based system that I'd like to shamelessly file the serial numbers off of and use as my own.[lol] Something where it's not exactly DnD where we would have to do Grappling with Grappling Rules, I'd like to at least make something less-abstract while still being manageable.

I was thinking something like, you know, a simple HP amount, a chance to dodge and chance to hit, characters would get a movement and an action per "turn", etc. It would also stop someone from doing a "My dude, Dr. Manlius McLagann shoots everything at every enemy before anyone else gets a chance to do anything with their wimpy mechs" sort of post.

Well, that's one of those instances where as a GM you'd want to step in and even some things out. Maybe even smack some heads if the situation calls for it.

Free form doesn't necessarily mean "do whatever you want". It's more "Describe your actions in the way you want to without any numerical representations so long as the GM permits".

I can understand rule-based RPs but I'm definitely a bigger fan of free form. The biggest problem I've seen with any roll-based rule set is that either the GM makes the rolls and thus the players always have to wait on the GM, or the players make their own rolls which they could cheat.

I could also suggest a bit of an in between, which would be something like what Storm did in Broken Sky; where there's stats*

but no rolls, and the GM can veto anything done with said stats he doesn't approve.

... Speaking of which, I should go post in that today...

Since there's no autohitting, we'd be waiting anyway. I'd have to basically bullshit estimate whether something hits, and how lethal it is, and I usually fail to take into account those random things that happen in Real Life (which usually make GREAT Cracked.com articles, by the way).

I also like having a system that I can blame when people think I'm being meancool

Being stationary makes a mech harder to hit.

Wut.

Machinegun: 2d4 damage, d8 accuracy
(Heavy) Gatling Gun: d8 damage, 2d6 accuracy

So, the machine gun and gatling gun have the same max damage, (8) but the machine gun has a higher minimum, while the gatling gun is more accurate?

The gatling gun being more accurate makes sense, but I don't see why it has the lower minimum damage.

I wrote harder instead of easier on the first one, and I inverted the damage on the second. Thanks for pointing 'em out, they're now fixed.

Maybe also give a bit more customization power to the players, allow stats to fall within certain ranges for size classes and allow the player themselves to pinpoint where inside that range it lies, to a maximum point total?

Edit: DISCLAIMER: I'm making these numbers up based on what seems good, so they're probably all going to have to be tweaked before everything starts. Same with the numbers above.

Back to your regularly scheduled post:

I guess we could. I had originally thought modifications were enough customization, like if someone chose impulse jets to make their light mech more graceful than deadly, or gave their heavy mech a shield to make it more defensive, etc. But let's see what we can work out.

While I want to avoid something "hardcore" where everyone does Min-Maxing in a desperate attempt to win, we can certainly have some customization. Right now, there's only two stats, though, so I don't know what else we could do with customization. Maybe also have perks, like Fallout? Perks... hmm. It could be that they are optional, and people choose, at most, one. If you can think of some, tell me, here's what I can think of.

  • Armless: -5hp +3 speed on a light mech, -15hp +3 speed on a heavy mech. No melee capabilities.
  • Armored: +10HP -d6 speed on a light mech, +20hp -d4 speed on a heavy mech.
  • Weapon Platform: A heavy mech loses 20hp to allow it to equip two weapons on its shoulders, or two mods on its back.

Additionally, I was thinking this system would be more like a rough estimate, somewhat for comparative purposes, than something set in stone. Hence why I said I'd make it invisible. I figured people wouldn't be that interested in knowing the dice rolls and whatnot. If you guys like the numbers, then I can make it more transparent. If not, what I planned on was somewhat cooking the numbers like a stick of butter at Paula Dean's house in certain situations. For example, if someone used a melee weapon on a stationary truck, I wouldn't even bother rolling anything, since there's no chance to dodge and the vehicle would be disabled anyway. And if someone in a light mech mech jumped up to karate-chop a low-flying helicopter, you can't expect me to have a special rule for that already. I just roll for accuracy, and figure that a karate-chopped helicopter is a falling helicopter.

I am also thinking that the signup post will be 500 lines by this point, scaring off any potential players surprised so... there's that.

Yet another reason I tend to shy away from getting RPs too rule heavy. But if you still want to go with rules...

I'd suggest dropping the HP/speed trade-off and just going with perks. If you get enough perk options and let everyone pick like two or three for their mech, then that would not only be easier to balance but would be more interesting, in my opinion. (Especially since you can just make an HP/speed trade-off related to the perks.)

So in that vein, here's a suggestion: extra armor plating, which I'd make either a perk or a module. Just straight up extra HP for speed loss.

As I said, I want to make the rules almost invisible in implementation, aside from having you keep track of how many times and how often you can use a weapon. So everyone just says what they shoot, what they shoot it at, and whether they are in range or not, and then I'll just figure out the rest.

For now, I'll drop the tradeoffs and only do perks.
