A series about a cartoon duck should not be as moving as this series is. Here's an interesting fact: the Disney Duck characters are much bigger in many parts of Europe than they are in the US, and according to Rosa, this series revealing exactly how Donald's various relatives are related to each other made front page news in Italy. For instance, in Italy, Grandma Duck was long considered Donald's aunt, not his actual grandmother.

[up]Well, considering that Carl Barks' stories were among the most popular Disney stories in Europe since at least the 80's, it's a case of being accustomed to those characters. They're to us what superheroes are to Americans, I guess (that is, in terms of familiarity and relating to them).

Well well, we do have a Life and Times thread. High time for a bump.

So to start off: which part is the best Life and Time story?

Hard to say. They're all really good.

Most memorable for me, though, is the King of the Klondike one, mostly for that awesome "Scrooge beats down everyone" scene.

Yeah, that was very memorable. Was that moment based on something from Barks, or did Rosa come up with that?

That scene specifically, I'm not sure — I'm not that caught up on my Duck history. Although Goldie's cameo is definitely from Barks, and the "Heart of the Yukon" side story is spun out of her first ever appearance.

Edit;[down]Right, sorry, it was "Prisoner" I was thinking of.

Hmm... That's definitely difficult question. That said, from the orignal series, I would probably put "The New Laird of Castle McDuck" as one of my personal favourites(easily in top 5). And then there's, of course, "The King of the Klondike". As for newer stories... The Dream of a Lifetime, easily, along with The Prisoner of White Agony Creek.

As for soundtrack, I remember back in 2014 when Rosa came to Finland to promote the soundtrack and the event in Helsinki where he signed posters and CD cases. Very nice man, too bad there wasn't enough time to talk with him more than "I'm very big fan" and such.

[up]x2 I guess Rosa was inspired by the scene in Back to the Klondike where Scrooge beat the whole bar of people after Goldie stole his gold rock size of goose's egg.

[up] I remember that issue (Back to the Klondike) back when I was reading Scans Daily. Funny thing, the first thing that struck me about that flashback was, "Scrooge is totally making this up." Recounting how he beat up a whole bar of prospectors because he was just so awesome, manly and cool? It really felt to me like Barks did not intend for us to take his story at face value.

Apparently, though, other writers, namely Rosa, did take it at face value and ran with it, resulting in Young Scrooge, the unstoppable badass who took on the US army because "I've finally found a foe worthy of me!"

If I recall correctly, there was a panel of a Barks comic with a rather more haggard and malnourished looking Goldie working Scrooge's claim, too.

Rosa for his part said he intended it to be ambiguous if those things "really" happened. He was going for a Tall Tale-style ambiguity, like Pecos Bill and John Henry and all that.
