Well, Showgirls is unusual in that it probably was intended to titillate, but fails so utterly as a film that it's nearly impossible to be titillated by it. It's also rated NC-17 which, despite what common perception would suggest, does not equal porn. X, the commonplace porn rating, is self-applied and not monitored by the MPAA; NC-17 is for movies with explicit content that are NOT porn. In a bit of irony, the movie that made the public think NC-17 was for porn was, you guessed it, Showgirls, because it was about strippers, made the unfortunate decision to open in 2,000 theatres, and featured the girl from Saved By The Bell topless.

I'm back. Time to get to work on a proper review of Chocotto Sister.

  • Demographic: Seinen.
  • Serialised in: Young Animal (which also serialises Futari Ecchi, Ai Yori Aoshi, Berserk, Detroit Metal City, and Yuria 100 Shiki.)
  • Premise: Slice-of-life series about a boy who gets a younger sister for Christmas (courtesy of Santa) and has to look after her. In the meantime, he also has to deal with various romantic entanglements.

Also, I've been meaning to bring this to the attention of everyone:

Kodomo No Omocha is INCREDIBLY close sounding in name to Kodomo no Jikan and Lotte no Omocha. If it shows up on the queue, it is not connected to either anime, and is rated, at worst, PG. It should be regarded as an overzealous misclick or a troll.

I must say, I've always found it amusing/retroactively horrifying that something so innocent should sound like a portmanteau of two of the most notorious works in anime fandom.

AFAIK, it stands for "A child's toy", while the others stand for "Lotte's toy" and "A child's time".

That said, let's just stick a note on the discussion page and be done with it so that we have a good excuse to zap any flag away.

So I've finished the manga for Chocotto Sister (8 volumes), and I'm just going to sum up the salient points.

  • Is it porn? No. No sexual intercourse. Topless scenes present with Nipple and Dimed averted. Barbie Doll Anatomy invoked for lower half of body in bath scenes, etc.
  • Is it paedo-pandering? This one is - honestly - a little tricky.
    • The sister's age is never outright stated, but I think she looks about 12-13. For reference, the other two kids are supposedly around her same age, and all three are still at an age where playing around in playgrounds is normal behaviour.
    • Most of the time, the children usually dress in an age-appropriate and non-sexualised manner. The majority of chapters don't contain underaged nudity, but then you get the odd chapter with several pages of kids in relatively skimpy tennis outfits complete with at least 1 panty shot, or extended public bath scenes.
    • Plot-wise, the main character has romantic relations with several other female characters, but while the sister is a major supporting character, she isn't a potential love interest. She does see the other women as rivals for the main character's affection, but her relationship with the main character is that of a younger sister and nothing more.
    • For most of the manga, the sister isn't put into sexualised situations as far as the plot is concerned, even when nudity is present. When the sister is shown either naked or half-dressed, it's either in the context of "being unfamiliar with societal norms" and getting the wrong advice from the diary (a gag which is dropped after the first volume, thereabouts) or regular non-sexual activities (e.g. communal baths).
  • Any mitigating factors? Well, it's a Slice Of Life / Romance series that deals with love and loss and explores various aspects of interpersonal relationships, both romantic and familial.

All things considered, it's not something that I'd be caught reading in public (it's still quite Ecchi by any standards), and it's a close decision for me, but I'm giving this one a Keep, clean if needed.

"The most notorious works in anime fandom" is kinda exaggerating it a little for the latter (if we're talking about notoriety and censorship, I would've gone for Aki Sora), but as promised, I'm not re-opening that can of worms just yet.

[up][up][up]13-ish? Fair enough. I added a couple of years to her age in my review because all the characters look younger than they are. The main character for example is post-highschool, but looks mid-highschool.

I know. As experience has shown, it's quite difficult to tell apart characters by age at times, and we don't have the benefit of seeing them go to a particular school. I went with 12-13 because:

  • She's at an age where wearing a bra is considered optional;
  • The three kids hang out at playgrounds;
  • Her behaviour (and that of the other two kids) suggests a younger age range. EDIT: They still believe in Santa! (Of course, the fact that Santa actually exists in-universe is another story...)

Sorry, I'm guilty of selective reading. I did read the "two of" and decided you'd condemned both outright, even though I don't recall the latter attracting quite as much controversy as the former.note  But we'll discuss this at a more appropriate time. Dropping subject now.

I was hoping for a "Does this need to be reviewed?" thread so we could avoid cluttering up this thread, but seeing how none of the mods of P5 members have created one yet, I want to get two things out of the way so I can stop "waiting for the other shoe to drop" on them.

Does anyone think that Loveless or MeruPuri need to be reviewed? Personally I think they are fairly mild Shoujo manga series with nothing cutworthy, designed to appeal to teenage girls rather that pedophiles, but I've seen some people label (falsely, in my opinion) them as shotacon series.

I can post more detailed information if anyone wants to discuss them.

"Does this need reviewed?"

I can't tell if you're making a little joke or actually missed the "to be" there. (The absence of it occurs in a couple of American dialects, but I thought that most people in those areas only talk like that nowadays.)

P.S. I apologise if this comes off as offensive; it is not meant to be.

[up]@Catbert: While I don't know a damned thing about Meru Puri, I can say that Loveless is probably safe enough to not merit reviewing. If they are both shoujo, then it gets the same leniency as shonen.

Regarding Webcomic.The Key To Her Heart: As I understand it it's like Anita Blake, where it goes from erotic, to flat-out porn, then back to just erotic again, right? I mean, I read the free chapter, and if it stays at that level I wouldn't even consider devil-heading it, but it's hard to tell.

Never read Anita Blake but that description looks about right to me. I suppose I could just upload it somewhere for detailed review (it's just 253 pages)...
