Why the hell did Buffy go "bad" for one episode? Either it wasn't explained or I missed the explanation.

I don't think it was meant to be a case of she was bad but just a rebellious/ arrogant phase. Considering much of the early shows were teenage aesop based, I think it was just showing how a person can change after...achieving something? (I don't know if that's drawing the right analogy...).

Another interpretation is that it was an early form of the reccuring theme in later seasons of Buffy thinking she was better than others since she was the Slayer (IIRC it came up in Series 6 and 7). Maybe it was a character theme that the writers thought to give a trial run but didn't pick it up until later (like the appearence of The First Evil in that one episode of Series 3). It's just conjecture though really...

I always assumed it was in some way the result of the trauma of the Master killing her the previous season.
