So this trope is about vertical back fins on mechas (shoulder fins are extemely atypical) the current image they don't look like fins and need something that really shows them off like this. or [1][2][3][4][5]

Most of those look more like folded-up wings to me, ala Transformers. Only exception are the second-to-last and last pictures (The last one is kinda neat in how it compares the fins).

From the page (emphasis mine):

Eva Fins are when a mecha has a pair of large fin-like projections from the back or shoulders that are far taller than they are wide, extending far above the head of the mech.

Current image shows just that. So.... What's the problem?

The current pic is fine...more than fine, in fact, since it's from the Trope Namer. The only thing I'd suggest is maybe a re-crop so that the fins are more prominent.

[up] That trope namer status is probably going to go away, also the trope 90% of the examples are fins / Wings attached to the back not shoulders, the image is actually misleading to the main examples trope (also a key point to the disuse of the trope itself.)

[up] I agree with that. I've seen those fins like the Gundams have a million times, but I didn't realize they were what this trope is about until I saw your pictures. Despite the name, NGE is a really unusual example of the trope, and it's not the best way to illustrate it.

[up], [up][up] Noted...I wouldn't mind a rename, but I still like Unit 01 as the illustration, pending something better. Shoulders of Doom specifically notes this as something that makes the bearer look taller.

I'd prefer a close-up image. This used to be the page image, but it was changed for some reason.

@ Scardoll: How are those pics "ala Transformers"? Transformers tend to have actual aircraft wings, these ones have wings that don't look like something stuck on the robots, not parts of actual aircraft.

Voting for original image, or a clearer version thereof. This is just another "my fandom is better" suggestion.

The gold Gundam's fins look like aircraft wings; also, I would prefer non-functional eva fins over folded up wings.

I see nothing wrong with the current image. Saying that shoulder fins are more rare is disingenuous—the spirit of the trope is clearly apparent in this image. The fins are also located between the shoulder and back—which is a fairly harmonious compromise. It's clear, it's the Trope Namer, and I don't really like images getting changed for picky reasons like this, when the current is great.

[up]Same as that opinion, only I don't see a value in having the Trope Namer as a picture. If it affects the quality of the picture at all, it's usually negative.

The Internet misuses, abuses, and overuses everything.

[up][up] Trope Namer or not, the current image matches the definition currently on the page, so I agree with that the current image is fine.

The OP reeks of Fan Myopia with "It's not a common example!"

@ Scardoll: Well, Transformers wings generally do not look like that[1]. It's the difference between a real-world aircraft assembled into a humanoid shape, and a humanoid shape with wings stuck on it. Unless you mean Transformers that turn into completely made-up alien aircraft.

More relevantly, yeah, I'd prefer something that's there for visual appeal more than function.
