I'll be damned, he really did the one thing he really did right: Making a new game? I've already given up hope and now this.

Well, I'll sure take a look at it.

People aren't as awful as the internet makes them out to be.

Is Yahtzee actually good at making games?

The Chzo Mythos games do seem to be popular.

I'm 26% in. So far it's well-written and witty, as well as pretty tough: there's a frustrating part where you must go through a very long stretch of spikes and monsters without a single save or checkpoint, and there's a couple parts where a weak enemy may drop on you from the top of the room and finish you off if you have only one hit point left (those bits are kind of funny though). That was in the library, though, and a tweet from Yahtzee says it gets easier from there on.

I also think I found a couple of non-critical bugs, but I don't think I'm gonna send an e-mail to Yahtzee about them. He'd probably just tell me off or something, if he'd read it at all.

^^ I liked 5 Days a Stranger and REALLY liked The Art Of Theft, so I'd say yes.

Enough good to justify his rantings? tongue

I don't believe in the "first make a work in a certain medium before even earning the very right to criticizing same" principle, so I'm not going to answer that.

No, I was just curious if he could do exact same ranting he does at his own games, not saying that he HAS to do good games before he has right to rant, just curious.

I didn't play every game by him, but the ones I played, which would be the entire Chzo series, Art of Theft (which is pretty much a Chzo spin-off) and 1213, were very good.

Trilby's Notes is of special note (no pun intended), as it's a horror game that's actually genuinely scary. A rarity indeed. I think it's his best game in general.

[up] I think he actually said that he wouldn't be very kind to his own games, if he would feature them.

The installer tends to place the install place in the place where the actual installer file is, probably your downloads folder.

Completed the game at 100% and got the best ending. Not the most amazing game, but Yathzee certainly does know how to make a well-designed Metroidvania. After the Library, and once you finish the Oil Rig stage, you can actually tackle any of the three artifacts separately - and each one has its own benefits making the others easier. And there's plenty of hidden stuff to find for 100% Completion.

Hell, it even takes a page from the post-SOTN Castlevania games with the multiple endings stuff, and it isn't a Guide Dang It! either.

Now, to figure out if there is in fact a hidden ending, because Yahtzee has trolled everyone before with Art of Theft's supposed secret unlockable.

Edit: Also, it seems Yahtzee still knows how to make good horror, better than the 'professionals'. Seriously, the Crystal Tombs are creepy as FUCK.

I dont know why he comments at the credits if there is (or not) a secret ending to the game when i can clearly see in the files of BGM that there are at least 3 more music themes that have yet to play during the game, specially if the are labeled bgm_judge1 Title: Secret Boss 1. Kinda undermines the suspense, wont you say?

Then again, maybe he could have made his friend to make the music just to trick the people into playing the game 2 more times with the alternate outfits.

So, when will be appropriate to talk about the end story spoilers? shall we wait for the Headscrathers page?

Actually, I think I know how the secret ending might be acquired. It's based on three things that you do early in the game... Firstly, when you start the game, don't kill ANY of the white rabbits. And when you get to the Blemineg village and the Library, don't kill any of the bewitched villagers. And apparently, you have to avoid hurting Gamey, too. I replayed the game and did the first two, I wasn't sure how to do the third. I'm gonna do another replay, see if I can avoid shooting Gamey, either by tiring him out, or hitting him with a Spirit Grendade. Still, the Judge's reaction to you not killing any villagers or white rabbits is hilarious.

the only trilby game yahtzee actually stands by is art of theft.

judging by the chzo mythos lp, in which the entire series is pretty much mercilessly torn apart for plotholes and bad writing, (although praised for the genuinely good parts of each game) while yahtzee comments at the bottom of (most?) posts explaining his thought process at the time, criticizes the games himself and guesses how he could have done it better nowadays.

so yeah. he wont rant like he does on zero punctuation (because hes not on zero punctuation when he rants), but he does rant against them fairly reasonably.

The game now has a trope page! Added a few examples, planning on adding more when I think of them.

And the first time you "fight" Gamey can actually be avoided - just run away. He won't even jump to follow you over a chest-high wall.

Edit: AH-HA! FOUND IT! And-

... Oh, fuck, it's Ballos all over again. This Is Gonna Suck.

Did Yahtzee ever do anything to Fast Eddie? 'Cuz Eddie sure does hate him.

I'm enjoying this game a lot. You have to give Yahtzee this; anyone who has made a bad game can't say to him "well let's see you make a better game".

To Cronosonic:

Yes, you have to NOT shot Gamey or Archivald, Brother in Law of Derek and go away to qualify for the secret JUDGMENT ending. . But before we analyze that ending i have to admit that Yahtzee made several mistakes, specially one that goes against his policy of Story + Gameplay combined.

You see, if you ignore him then you will meet him again in the Dark One's Lair for the boss fight and Derek says "I told you to go with the Blemineg" even if there wasn't any single piece of dialog when you leave Gamey behind until that point. Strangely, Yahtzee did remembered to put dialog in the Gamey Dopleganger in the judgment section where he explain that Derek went away to save the world.

Second, if you DO shot him with the shotgun (spirit bombs dont work) then Rebeca will heal him of that wound. Problem is, how can she heal Gamey without effort but cant heal Derek if she doesn't have the Spirit of Peace? (healing spell)

Now this one is nitpicking but why killing the Secret Boss will make everything and everyone loose all their negativity and get rid of all the Dark Ones?.

PD: The secret sequential boss fight is quite good and much better than the anti climax that was the Dark Lord in my opinion (specially if you have maxed bombs, he goes down in 5 seconds)

Question to those who have finished the game!

Do the alternate outfits do anything different mechanically?

To GG Crono:

The Alternate Outfits do.... Zero suit just gives you the map with all the secrets early at the start of the game and the Millionaire Suit just makes enemies drop moar items on death but since most of the items are money anyway then you could say that makes enemies drop more money.

New question! I've gotten to the Judge. Is there any trick to predicting the lightning bolts from his second form? Every time, the first one that comes knocks me right off the platforms.
