So, does that include this trope then? Because it is being used for Badass X where X is "speaks spanish."
We cannot have a page that is just Badass And Speaks Spanish. We can have a Swarthy Spanish Swashbuckler page.
Yes, this trope is not just the language. It's also not about swashbuckling though.
Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickWhich is really my point. This trope is, as used, Badasses who speak spanish, ranging from Zorro to an character played by Michelle Rodreguiz.
It's used too broadly, but there is a character trope of being:
- Hispanic with a notable accent
- Bound to a code of honour
- Romantic, dashing, and/or debonair
- Badass with their weapon of choice
- Athletic, nimble and graceful in battle
- Quick thinking and witty
All of those above traits must apply. Every single one of them to count for this trope. Swashbuckler is not one of the traits, but that doesn't mean it's not a trope.
Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickI guess I'm not clear on the meaning of "swashbuckler" because that's the definition I was going for. Zorro applies. Michelle Rodriguez characters do not (though they are all very much Fiery Latinas.
A swashbuckler is someone who fights with a sword (normally a rapier or saber) and an optional buckler in a theatrical fencing style or a genre of film focusing around the same. Not what we're going for here but people keep thinking of it because Zorro is a swashbuckler.

Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickSo should the trope be modified so those six criteria are listed? And should we keep the name or change it to 'Hispanic' on account of 'Spaniard' meaning someone from Spain.
And the first criterion should definitely be broadened to account for FantasyCounterpartCultures such as Braavos.
Seconded.
That said, how does this fit with the Baddas cleanup effort?
shimaspawn, I generally agree with your description of what the trope should be, but the trope description we have right now really doesn't reflect it well. Do you think you could come up with an improved trope description?
Hmm I thought we're not using Badass for a word - how come Badass Angster still has it?

It's difficult to think of other words that also encompass the ideas of grace, wit, honor and competence.
Yeah, it really ought to be fine. It's a good word.
Rhymes with "Protracted."Well, running a crowner with just one option is kind of laughable, so other suggestions would be appreciated. So far I'm thinking something like Swashbuckling Spaniard would do, though I suppose if we want to nitpick that's too narrow in terms of nationality.
Also, we need more votes.
I agree to Swashbuckling Hispanic, it conveys the archaic pistolier / fencer idea of a stock character while leaving out the notion of badasses who just happen to be also spanish/latino
The Mexican bit there is indeed a nationalist rambling, while the spanish heritage can be a touchy issue in modern latin-america it's nowhere near the denial levels the derailment suggests and it's generally just accepted in non-populist / indigenist circles.
This looks like consensus to me.
18 to 1 after a few days, I'd say that's pretty clear cut.
The only question now is what to change it to? Do we have any other suggestions besides Swashbuckling Hispanic and Swashbuckling Spaniard?
Swashbuckling would definitely give me the wrong idea. I'd prefer to find something more appropriate if we can. Unfortunately, the suggestion I had turned out not to mean what I thought, so this post isn't as helpful as I'd originally hoped.

Crown Description:
It has been argued that Badass Spaniard's name is too broad and doesn't cover any of the specifics involved in the trope, which include a sense of honor, wit, grace in battle and romance. A rename has been suggested to correct this issue.
Because we must never make another Badass And X trope. We are working to delete all the ones we have now.
