Apparently it's back on Adult Swim. Why/when did they decide to do this?

April fools joke one night only. Catch some clips on Youtube if you like.

Whatever tomorrow brings I'll be there. With open arms and open eyes.

Well, we don't actually know if it's not going to be continued or not (a la The Nineties Are All That).

But we do know it was a surprise spring on watchers for April Fools. A very awesome surprise spring.

I imagine this is to test the waters for a Toonami revival after executives saw the success of Nick's block. This is awesome, as the recent actions of Nickelodeon (The 90's Are All That, DV Ds for all their old shows) got me to respect them a lot more, and hopefully Cartoon Network will go the same way.

Needs a new signature.

I would love Toonami to come back.

But Adult Swim's hatred for anime and the fact that it's an obvious April fools joke cause me to not keep my hopes very high.

For those of you who (probably) missed it, this awesome dude uploaded all the new bumps:

https://www.youtube.com/user/insanekashi009/videos

It's one thing to run a movie for an April Fool's Day prank, but it's quite another to 1.)Take the time and effort to animate and record these likely expensive bumps, and 2.) Get the rights to air these again (unless they decided to air them without the rights, which is risky).

Adult Swim wouldn't have gone to all this trouble if they hated anime, and I doubt they'd put this much effort into trolling. And I read a post on tumblr about how Steven Blum hinted that if this gets good reception, Toonami might stay.

Animating new bumps? Are you serious? These are the exact same bumps Toonami had. They're just re-using them.

And whether they show it or not, A.S. does hate anime. I can't tell you how many times they've used bumps showing their disdain for it.

It was nice to see this for April fools, nostalgia and all.

Watching that episode of Tenchi in English made me want to deafen myself permanently though tongue

[up][up]it's been a while since I've seen Toonami. The 3D animation may not be new, but they did alter and create some new graphics, which admittedly isn't that hard to do. Getting Steven Blum back is something though.

I think AS just hates new anime. If they hated it all, I think this prank would have been a lot more sarcastic and condescending than the Crowning Moment OF Awesome most fans are seeing it as.

And maybe those bumps dumping on anime are used more to pander to the mainstream crowd that just tunes in for the comedy. I haven't watched adult swim much, so I don't really know.

Not just Toonami, but a particular line-up, from around 2001 I think, and from the afternoon, at that. Pre-Adult Swim. I was surprised by how well I remembered the bumps.

How did they air DBZ if nick has the rights?

But nick has the rights to Dbz also. They aired Dbz movies many times.

TOM at the very least is reanimated (you can tell by way of coloration and certain aspects of his design, which is close to TOM 3 but a bit... refined. Slightly more humanlike, I guess) in several of the bumps, though they probably used mostly older bumps for nostalgia's sake.

[up][up] It's possible that more than one network has the rights to air the show. I remember that, back when the most recent TMNT series was out, it aired on CN as well as on CBS on Saturday mornings. Also, Evangelion aired for awhile on Adult Swim, and it aired on the Anime Network as well. I've wondered before if it has to do with what kind of channel it is, you know, whether it's basic cable or pay cable or whatnot.

I think they got the rights to use the anime by advertising the DVD's for the said anime I think.

From what I've heard CN nor AS is saying whether or not it was a prank or not.

Most of these bumps are likely recycled animation from when Toonami was actually running- they just roped Steve Blum back in to record new lines for TOM, and edited in new clips. I doubt they'd reanimate original footage just for one night. But then again, these bumps were in HD!

[up][up]You are correct. They aired anime that not only aired like 10 years ago, but only ones that are still available on DVD and not out of stock, mostly in BANDAI's "Anime Legends" series. The exception, of course, being Bleach, the episode of which is not on DVD yet.

With regards to the The90s Are All That comparison, we did know it was sticking around. It was announced well in advance.

So long as TOM never has a face again and they keep SARA around, I'm in. BRING IT BACK.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.
