That's actually awful. Almost half of the filler being removed is the filler cut from the Great Saiyaman arc (13 episodes of content were cut there, out of 27). And the Great Saiyaman arc filler didn't hurt the series at all aside from the changes it made in how Gohan's identity is discovered - which wasn't changed by Kai, resulting in an extremely awkward adaptation of the arc. But if most of the filler being removed is from pure filler episodes that will do little to improve the actual pacing of the canon episodes.

A 3:1 chapter to episode ratio results in the best pacing in most cases so the Boo arc should have been ~33 episodes. I'm aware that they're constrained by how much editing they can do (because they're too cheap to do an actual remake) but 69 isn't even close. And they cut out the best filler.

They did an awful job, yeah.

@Mark dying from a bullet: he can't use ki, so he was much weaker than Dragonball martial artists.

But Goku couldn't really use Ki at first either, even if he did probably have lots of it in the beginning.

I think Goku just has thick skin. I think bullet resistance is not completely dependent on ki.

I mean, Master Roshi had a power level in the hundreds early on, and he expressed concern about taking on the Red Ribbon Army and their guns and weapons.

I don't think that Saiyans and Humans are completely identical in capabilities, even at roughly equivalent power levels.

@unnoun The guidebooks support you on that one. Goku's ability to be hit by a bullet without a scratch is attributed to being a Saiyan and having unusual durability. Roshi and Kuririn actually had bullet holes from Lunch's gun and Roshi was much stronger than Goku as well.

Any hopes of the Blu Ray release of Majin Buu Arc of Dragon Ball Z Kai retaining the 4:3 full screen aspect ratio have been dashed. The Blu Ray and Standard DVD release of Dragon Ball Z Kai's Majin Buu Arc are going to be widescreen formats only. Man, with all the controversy and anger among the Dragon Ball fandom about the unnecessarily cropped aspect ratios of several DVD and Blu Ray releases from both Toei Animation and Funimation over the years, you'd think they would at least find the time create the proper aspect ration for all home video releases. Looks like Toei Animation just don't give a shit and are rushing out the Majin Buu Arc of Dragon Ball Z Kai to make a quick buck.

At this stage we should be used to Toei Animation screwing over the Dragon Ball fanbase and the company is infamous for cutting corners when it comes to the budgets of animated shows, just look at Toriko, that anime got royally screwed over by Toei because of Toei's consistently low budget for the show. This, however, is a horrible case of penny pinching and just flat out laziness. You would think that Toei Animation was run by Mr Krabs. I mean, who in the hell thinks it's good idea to release a Blu Ray DVD for widescreen only!? FUCK THIS COMPANY!

In all fairness, the Pretty Cure franchise makes a crapload of money in terms of merchandise, DVD and BD sales. It also gains consistently good ratings, so I can see why Toei would be more willing to pump money into a franchise like that as supposed to Dragon Ball, a franchise which has stagnated in terms of total income from merchandise, DVD and BD sales etc since 2007.

Honestly though, if you're not gonna release a DVD or Blu Ray in the proper format, don't fucking bother. The main reason most people buy Blu Ray is because, believe it or not, it looks better! They could have probably gotten away with it if it was just on standard DVD but on Blu Ray as well, fuck that!

I'm not trying to knock the widescreen format at all. I mean, certain TV shows or movies, animate or not, look even better in high definition on a widescreen format. But considering how kinda ancient the animation is for Dragon Ball Z, and how well it was suited in the 4:3 fullscreen aspect ratio, it's gonna look atrocious with how jarringly stretched out it's gonna be.

Toei animation will never learn.

Don't know. Combining Kaioken with any Super Saiyan form only happened in filler, and it's implied to be really taxing.

Also, Goku only did it while he was already dead.

I don't recall any reason ever given in the show for why the Kaioken wouldn't work in conjunction with a Super Saiyan. Goku just stopped doing it.

Given how self-destructive the power jump is - unlike Super Saiyan, it rapidly increases your power level without giving your body the ability to withstand that power level - it might just be too dangerous to use at higher powers due to the exponential nature of its boost? Maybe Goku would implode if he tried to use Kaioken while Super Saiyan 3? I don't know.

Goku's body would definitely have exploded if he combined Kaioken with any form of Super Saiyan. Goku could only maintain using Super Saiyan and Kaioken for about five seconds before it disappeared, and this was when he had a "deceased" body, which were way more durable than a "mortal" body. If he tried to pull that sort of shit when he was alive, it wouldn't have ended pretty.
