My neighbour was telling me about his daughter in newcastle today, and how she was a marine biologist and how I would probably get a long with her… >_<.

Anyway it got me thinking about how marine biology is a very trendy thing to be able to say you are working in if you're under 35. Not quite on the same level as say a astronaut or ballerina, but something that most people think of as being 'kray' despite knowing nothing about the field or what it involves.

What do you consider to be a 'cool' job?

Sexologist always comes off as hilariously awesome sounding. But not "cool". It's just hilariously awesome.

Closest I can get to cool and just plain cool is being a Myth Buster.

Master of Whiskey. I saw it on Bar Rescue; one of the specialists the guy called in to help out a bar, his job title was Master of Whiskey.

... I want that job.

Making fans and refrigerators. Maintaining a skating rink. Being a lifeguard. Being an Antarctic researcher.

Although that last one actually would be pretty cool.

Or being one of those guys working on shows like Planet Earth.

And to say I was nervous... it wouldn't be quite enough.

@ The Dead Mans Life: being a parapsychologist, always sounded cool to me. But I doubt you can make a living off it.

I have degree in entomology, and depending on how my interviews go next week, I may have a job in that field.

Those real-life folks do great work, but it's definitely not for me. I'm way too squeamish to work with human remains.

@Loni: What job would that be?

As for the topic, I'm hoping to get into grad school working toward engineering photovoltaic cells (solar panels), and hopefully working in that field down the line. Ideally, I'd like to end up able to go to developing countries and set up things like solar-powered water pumps for wells, and small solar stations for schools and the like.

I think that'd be cool, anyway. tongue

From certain, possibly misguided perspectives, I think that war journalism leaves space for great ambitions.

@betterthan: War journalism would be both terrifying and fascinating. I'd still rather go to places where the wars have stopped, and help rebuild, though.

edit-> @joey: Oh, I'm not an animal person at all, aside from cats. I love cats. But I have no stomach for biology classes. I'm a science guy. tongue

Inb4 social vs core science argument

Anyway, I think any of the social sciences, really. I mean, contributing to human development? That's epic.

Now, I'm probably biased because I want to be a research psychologist, but meh.

@Hope: Society develops by the progression of technology. Technology progresses because of advances in science - physical sciences, that is (most often, chemistry and physics). Social science tracks progression, and understands it, but it rarely actually shapes it.

If Social Science shaped progression, we'd have gotten rid of war centuries ago. Instead, we've gotten better at it. Never mind the complete lack of social scientists predicting the rise of the internet and "plugged-in" culture. Very few of them are even researching it properly, that I've seen.

@Joey: I'm a Physics major who wants to go into Materials Engineering with some interests in International Development. It's not so much that I'm dismissive as just that I am well aware where my strong points lie. tongue
