And the pattern here is that the creators don't care about in-universe logic for the purpose of adding characters or items that are neat to play with.
It is a subtrope of Story and Gameplay Segregation. The question is rather if it's distinct enough for its own trope.

The Internet misuses, abuses, and overuses everything.I'd say that this one isn't, but various other tropes suggested in this thread are.
For example, "a boss is also an unlockable character, and that character can be used to fight that boss" is a valid trope, or at least a valid trivia page.
Rhetorical, eh? ... Eight!I think there's a some sort of trope here somewhere. People keep mentioning Unusually Uninteresting Sight which isn't what this is about since when its from game mechanics that's different.
To take Chrono Trigger for example, Magus in the party is this trope because there's not reactions to him from people who in-universe would probably start a fight on sight with whole leader of an enemy nation showing up in his enemies castle. While Frog or Robo are an Unusually Uninteresting Sight since if they looked normal they would still be bit players in their worlds.
However that said this trope doesn't seem to have been put together coherently and seems more focused on Aversions of the The Dev Team Thinks of Everything. Also like this trope was thinking Gameplay and Story Segregation is an index and trying to round off some things.
Also the Canon Shadow is neither indicative nor representative in my book. And the trope entry does not immediately clarify why it has that name.
I don't think that getting a character or item by actually cheating, using a Gameshark or similar, should count at all. But DLC and New Game Plus should. The creators have to some extent decided that the character/item should go in there, unlike something you get by cheating.
And the example of the robot in the fantasy world is just a bad example and should be deleted. It's Unusually Uninteresting Sight.

Crown Description:
Canon Shadow isn't thriving (20 wicks, 5 inbounds). It is about how, if you have an unusual item or character in the party, NP Cs don't react to that even when they should; this is an aversion of The Dev Team Thinks Of Everything. It is unclear where the name comes from; the trope is not related to canon, nor to shadows.
Well, gameplay mechanics are recurring patterns.
