@maybesomeone You say they're harmful, but we've only talked about the bad recs here. There are plenty of pages that follow rules and give out good stuff.

Bother. I would like to go back and try again, but I don't think that I'd make it go through.

Ah well, let's work with what we have. Create an standard for Fanfic Recs. The way I see it, there's no point in recommending explicit fics, but if that's what most people want, then I can't do anything against that.

What I will say is that if it crosses certain lines that we're (Or at least, I am) not interested in crossing (Paedophillia, bestiality, furry fics) then I don't see why we're going to keep them going.

I don't have a problem with recs for fiction with explicit content providing the recs themselves aren't creepy or overtly sexual, but as has been said, there's no such thing as a non-creepy recommendation for MLP (or Disney princess) porn.

This is why I think Autumncomet's suggestion is a good one.

We have rules for the recs. They are very simple: No reccing a fix that includes explicit sex younger than 16/16, and no explicit descriptions in the rec itself. The point being so that if you (for example) don't like pony—no, I'm ignoring that now. If for example you don't like hearing about the characters of Tangled having sex, you just don't click on the link. The rec itself will not scar you. That's the goal.

Okay, let's drop MLP for a moment, and just look at Tangled. What exactly makes What You Don't Know creepy? It's a sweet little love story between two damaged but recovering individuals, which happens to have (vanilla, over legal age, heterosexual) sex in it. If that's creepy, so is My Lovely Ghost Kana . . .

Please don't respond to that by saying that My Lovely Ghost Kana is creepy.

^^ But the rec itself is still TVT recommending Disney princess porn. It's not that it's scarring, it's creepy and irresponsible.

^ I don't know anything about My Lovely Ghost Kana, but it's not Disney princess porn so I don't see how that follows.

@Bobby: I'm using it as an analogy because it contains the same level of sexual content as What You Don't Know, and because it's also about damaged individuals healing through their love for each other.

I thought Eddie already put something like the review disclaimer on every fanfic page. You know "These recommendations are not TV Trope's recommendations. TV Tropes does not have an opinion." or whatever.

EDIT: Guess not. Well, that should probably be done.

Feo: what makes it creepy is that it's characters from a fucking children's cartoon.

What setnakhte said. Just because that work has some similarities to Tangled doesn't make the comparison intrinsically valid.

Not that My Lovely Ghost Kana is necessarily OK, but I'm not going to pass judgement on it since I don't know what it is. It's simply irrelevant to the matter at hand.

@ Discar: It's still tropers reccing the stuff and this site providing them with a mouthpiece to do so, which is bad enough. Any disclaimer of that sort would be transparently empty verbiage.

I thought we had a fanfic recommendation thread just for this, even?

Would your brain break if I said there was a giant Transformers slash fandom?

It would not, but it would certainly make me wonder why do we have to be the ones that brought it up in a positive light in the first place.

OK, let's not derail here. We all know there's some yucky stuff online; it's the content of this site that's under discussion.

So Bobby seems to like my suggestion of "the explicitness level of the recommended fic allowed depends on the explicitness/maturity level of the media in question," which feo doesn't. Any other opinions?

They read about children's cartoon characters fucking because fucking (and, more generally, relationships) has a lot of emotion wrapped up in it. In general, fanfics that put established characters outside their established zones of behavior make for interesting expansions on the original stories, and cartoon characters fucking are outside their established zones of behavior while still (if the author is good) behaving according to their established personalities.

(This isn't about getting off on it, because I didn't get off on What You Don't Know. I just thought it was a decent story. I wouldn't want to see it removed for the same reason I wouldn't want to see a recommendation for any other good story removed—and I think I'd think the same if I were gay, and had no interest in heterosexual fucking in and of itself.)

Consider mine a vote against Autumn/Bobby's suggestion. We already have two simple rules handed down by Word of Admin. If people follow them, I don't see a problem, no matter who the work in question is intended to be aimed at. Periphery Demographic and all that.

The issue is, again, not that the fanfic will be read by por kids or whatever, but simply that it's Tv T encouraging slash fiction involving rather dubious features we're simply not interested in. hell, even our admin agrees.

Anyway, I'm going to vote for Bobby's suggestion as it seems pretty legit and the best possible resolution.
