Sam and Max works well. To me, someone who has never seen/read Batman, the current picture looks like he has a breathing device.

In general, I like the idea of using the trope namer as the page picture.
But Batman has a couple dozen tropes named after him, and it seems like there are hundreds of pictures of him on the site. I'm good with Sam and Max.
