Yeah, thanks for the heads up.

I brought up the weird faces and long hikes, cause Bethesda owns Fallout now, and the weird faces are a tradition.

I know of Unity engine mainly as a web-game engine. Kongregate has a Unity game category. Many of the game there are done by Indie developer as a proof-of-concept game, since it still relatively new.

Recently, some professional developers have started doing commercial web games with Unity and the results are fairly impressive. This game is turn-based in the style of Heroes Of Might and Magic. From what I have experience playing some of those games (which admittedly, not that much), I haven't encountered any serious problem. I haven't play any non-browser-based Unity game though.

Actually, Wasteland and Fallout aren't that similar besides whole "Apocalyptic future based on old time period" thing tongue Especially gameplay wise.

So while Fallout is inspired by Wasteland, I'm pretty sure that some Wasteland fans will get angry if you ask that question from them.

They're pretty similar. The setting is the main difference. By comparison Fallout feels alot more toned down and less whacky (aside from Fallout 2's derpiness anyway) and Wasteland has more of an 80s feel compared to Fallout's retro 50s feel.

However the overall gameplay is quite similar, though Fallout's quest design is far better with a greater variety of choices and more options in solving the quests and Wasteland's combat is more party based than Fallout's single character turn based combat.

Well, maybe they can combine all the lessons they have learned from the past, to create the best Ceerupag ever? With Wasteland's team based combat, Fallout's amazing quest design, and a licensed Michael Jackson soundtrack?

Fallout's retro 50s feel.

I'm still not getting this. I'm not very far into 2, but I've played al of 1, 3 and NV, and the only one that stood out for being particularly 50's conscious was 3 (much to its inexplicability). There are a few elements of kitsch in Vault Boy, but I feel like the concept was massively played up in 3, to the point of unrecognisable inconformity.

The Brotherhood of Steel are particularly 80's, I think.

This post has been powered by avenging fury and a balanced diet.

Well the retro 50s feel of the original Fallouts and New Vegas feels toned down compared to 3 because in the (real) Fallout the whole 50s culture element is specifically Pre War. So before the bombs dropped USA was in this 50s mindset of whacky technology and backwards culture. You can see all the 50s/pulpy elements in all the prewar artifacts. Rep Con in New Vegas has some posters that have the occasional misogyny (Don't tell your Wife! She can't keep a secret!) and of course the prewar tech is really wacky and over the top in that kind of "how the 50s perceived the future" way.

Fallout 3 looked at that and missed the point. So now even post war everything is all 50s and the population are spouting on about "commie bastards" when that shouldn't mean anything to them and the 'president' harps on the radio about stuff that no longer exists (e.g. commies) and keeps perpetuating this culture when even the Enclave wouldn't waste time on anything like that.

I've liked every Fallout game I've played.
Guess I'm just a weirdo.

Also, the accentuated Prewar-ness in DC kinda made sense to me, since that would be the epicenter of patriotism beforehand. I don't question it because I liked the atmosphere it imparted. Well, the 50's aspects at least. The gray does get old after a while.

I like pretty much every Fallout game I have played so far as well. I just don't get the visceral hatred that some have, and I include me in that as I was not a fan of Fallout 2 at first, for installments in the series. That I love Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas, despite that latter's habit of crashing worse than Ayrton Senna at Imola, is on record in this very site.

I hope Wasteland 2 goes on my like list. Or even better, my love one.

The Unity engine is being used probably because it'll allow them to make easy ports to 360, PS 3, Android, iOS, Wii, etc.

Considering Fargo has said they have no interest in console porting...that's probably not why they're using it.

I've loved every Fallout game i've tried, so far. 1 was great, 2 was even better, 3 was it's glorious jump to the next gen, and New Vegas was 3's Fallout 2(AKA Vastly improved, bigger sequel).

My hopes for Wasteland 2 are high.

After going back and playing dome Fallout 2, I'm ready for this. Three and New Vegas are great, but I'd like some more top down, turn-based, RPG action.

Quick interview with Fargo

The key point from that is that the vision document is coming soon. Hopefully it'll be relatively spoiler free.

Brother None, the admin for NMA and the official Wasteland 2 forums has already read an early draft for it and "was impressed by some of the ideas in there".

I know that. I'm just saying that my standards are high, cause every game before it has a damn good pedigree.

Do you have a source? Because I don't think there's any reason to disbelieve Fargo. Wasteland 2 is pretty blatantly fanservice, after all.

[up][up]Depending on technical limitations and licensing, that could easily cost them more money than they'd make.

Update:

  • The game will use the Unity 3 Game Engine.
  • Graphically still top-down, but with 3D model; more focus will be put on the environment and physics than character models because that's what you're going to be seeing much more clearly
  • Still turn-based (thank God, maybe there's hope for that genre in this hemisphere)

I thought it was pretty clear it wasn't about the money. It was about making a crpg for the fans without the need to compromise for a larger audience, although the fact that the game is fully funded and his company will get all the profits from sales as opposed to the publishing model where he doesn't even get royalty probably helps.

But the point is, Fargo has no interest in lying to the fans considering he's likely to use the fan funded model for the next couple of games he makes and pulling a bait and switch on the fans like that is only going to ruin the reputation he's built up.

I've never seen porting referred to as a bait and switch before. Would it really be such a bad thing if it did end up getting ported?

CRP Gs are designed with a PC in mind, Consoles have a very different interface. I'm just not sure you can design a CRPG type game on the console without making some compromises to the interface or losing some of the complexity due to the different type of controls.

There's also the other big factor which would be that a lot of the funding would be poured into porting the game instead of improving the quality of the base game.

It'd be something to consider after the title had launched and well after they'd gotten some money from sales to do it but designing it as a multiplatform title from the beginning would mean making sacrifices all over the board.

It's a bait and switch because Fargo has specifically stated that he's making a crpg and that he has no interest in making a console version, at best he's said he might port it over to iOS since the interface is similar but that would be a consideration for after launch. That's what he's promised and that's what the fans have chosen to fund.

I don't know why JAF would think he'd have any interest in doing anything else.
