I can suggest one or two. The Touhou wiki(s) has a lot of images far down in the profiles of the character pages, and you can see well enough if the hat itself would make a good image on this very wiki. It's also not unlikely that you can find several characters in one pic, though sufficient emphasis on the hats would be a little harder.

I don't like TF2 hats. They're gimmicks for the players to customise their avatars with more than they're iconic in any way. For that game, the trope is really more just Hat or Fashion Accessory or Customisable Avatar. They add nothing to the character design, and they're not part of the character.

Touhou, on the other hand, is infamous for all the hats the characters wear, and how you can tell one character from another just by the hat. Many are just ribbons and other hair accessories, though.

Mario also has a very iconic hat. The only issue I have with him is that he's probably on enough pictures as it is.

To be fair, several classes do have hats as part of their bog-standard design (Scout's cap, Soldier's helmet, Demoman's skullcap, Engineer's helmet, Sniper's... uh, hat), and always did, although I do prefer the more outlandish ones that came later. I'd also debate the "not part of the character", part, considering most of the hats are exclusive to a specific character, specifically because they fit with the class's established character. Also, the trope isn't just about iconic hats; the laconic only cites "impressive" hats, which several TF2 ones qualify for.

Infamous? Really? Because I've never ever ever EVER first thought "hats" when I think Touhou. Bullet hell, yes. Impossibly high female-to-male ratio, yes (I've heard there are two males, but I've never once seen them). Overly-designed outfits with more ruffles than a Frito-Lay factory, yes. Fancy hats, no.

Meanwhile, TF2's basically come to be defined by hats (if in a by-and-large tongue-in-cheek fashion), which I think puts it on a pedestal above. I mean, it has so many hats that even the hats have hats, as I highlighted earlier in the discussion. I like having something like that, operating by Rule of Funny, than some generic one on one of Touhou's honestly rather samey females.

Also, I'd rather have a picture that doesn't so blatantly look like it'd fit on the Anime & Manga subpage. Doesn't necessarily have to be TF 2, although I'd obviously like to use it. As I recall, Professor Layton's got an awesome (and impossibly tall) top hat (e.g.◊), and his art style's fairly western-influenced, so there's another option...

Long and short of it, I dislike using Touhou's hats about as much as you evidently dislike TF2's hats - especially if we're going to get into an argument over "iconic", since I don't find any Touhou hat to fit that description.

(Apologies if I'm coming across as rude... I don't hate Touhou, although I'll admit to never having played it before.)

Honestly, I think of Touhou mods in TF2 before I think about hats in TF2. Or comical graphics. Or excuse plot. Or any of the class memes. Before this thread I had a vague knowledge that it was possible to customise your hat in the game, but that was about it. It all depends on which side of the net you're from. Also, infamous doesn't mean the very first thing you think about.

The second line of the trope is, "A discerning hero/villain just can't be seen without their Nice Hat! Harming the nice hat may be akin to kicking the dog, with disastrous results." That implies it is iconic or at least something you'd heavily connect to the character, and not just a hat, any hat. Any hat in TF2 is just one hat among many.

I'd be hard pressed to remember what hat the various TF2 classes actually wear, even if I know their overall design. Can't say that has ever been the case for Touhou, even when I barely knew the series. And you can't really claim they all look the same when the series spawn a video like the Bad Apple shadow art one. That's all about how they're distinct from each other, even in just silhouettes.

Now, I don't really care from where the image comes from, I just don't think TF2 is good source for this particular trope.
