It's not relevant anymore when it devolves into pointless semantics battles, though—that only gets in the way of further discussion.

And, regarding your previous post ("How words are used, helps to understand society."), well, that's a related but whole 'nother topic entirely.

Status of homosexuality? I keep hearing that's more about religion and maybe the "ick factor."

And "common" or "normal" could be applied to all kinds of subjects.

Saying that attraction towards the opposite sex is 'normal' implies that attraction towards the same sex and/or lack of attraction towards the opposite sex is 'not normal'. From the historical and biological point of view statements like that are simply inaccurate.

In the context of trying to alter perception of gender roles we shouldn't use 'normal' as synonym for 'common', because with or without bigots 'normal' simply isn't the most accurate word.
