From the historical and biological point of view statements like that are simply inaccurate.
In the context of trying to alter perception of gender roles we shouldn't use 'normal' as synonym for 'common', because with or without bigots 'normal' simply isn't the most accurate word.
The status of homosexuality, and the public's distinction between "common" and "normal" are both direct elements of gender roles.
