This seems to be a pretty awesome thing. Plus, everyone in this forum appears to enjoy writing. Anyone willing to give it a go?

Pretty interesting. Last night, I was discussing a situation in Real Life that could be converted into such a story.

However, I doubt I'll be able to get to writing a story for the contest. But I'll think about it.

This is actually right up my alley- I have a character who spent much of his childhood as an Ill Boy -but I, like most writing-related things, don't have time.

Neat idea, but a theme like that seems like it'll create a rather mawkish anthology.

[up]Agreed. Sentimentality is not my thing, and while there's certainly other ways to do it, this isn't a theme that speaks to me.

Uh - that's weird - my competition entry for the forum contest seems... to be in this alley as well. Um. Weird. I'll certainly think about it.

And, I agree about the potential mawkishness of the anthology.

...On second thought, the plot that I had in mind probably won't sit too well

with the hospital people. I do not like dealing with pity. Or mawkishness, as you guys have said.

My idea is more tragic, considering the child in question wouldn't be the center of the story. Rather, the parents...

I think this could be fun to at least try. Obviously, I'll lose, but it would be great to practice and submit something.

But the submission date is soon. I doubt I'll be able to finish a quality story in time.

I feel a bit bad about not jumping to this, but... money's in short supply right now.

Even so, I can think of plenty of non-sentimental stories to be told about ill kids. Heck, I have a couple of ideas for ones. (Actually, my ideas are about people who are quadriplegic rather than ill, but close enough.) And nothing in the competition prompt says that the story has to be sentimental or non-bitter.
