I found out to my cost that two litre turbocharged engines in heavy saloons are really not suited to short commutes. 23-24 mpg at best!
I actually want a longer commute, it'd be better for my engine and my wallet

So I've been hanging out with an engineer friend who works for the auto industry.
I am appalled by what he told me. Appalled. It's in freaking shambles. A disaster. Standards falling everywhere. Mercedes? The brand whose cars spend the most time at the workshop! And Class-A Mercedes carry a Renault engine. Renault! As for Bugatti? They carry Volkswagen engines! As do so many other brands! There's been so many buyouts it's crazy! What are anti-trust laws for? As if the auto industry wasn't oligopolic enough already!
I... I don't believe in anything any more.

So less than an hour into Le Mans and we're already under Safety Car conditions after one of the factory 911 RSRs caught fire and two other cars crashed into each other trying to avoid it.

@ Handle: It's not the half of it — for example, a new Fiat 500 and a Ford Ka are made in the same factory. Cars are very expensive to develop these days due to tightening regulations, so there's a lot of Joint Ventures and Platform Sharing as well as a lot of large groups. VAG is pretty much the biggest.
And for other examples off the top of my head:
- The Mercedes Citan is basically a rebranded Renault Kangoo
- The Mercedes Sprinter and the Volkswagen Crafter are produced in the same factories, and are almost identical vans in terms of bodyworknote .

@Greenmantle: betcha half a dollar those regulations came about the way they did as a result of lobbying from the brands themselves.

Eh, honestly I go more for luxury than sportiness when I pick out my cars.

I mean, train travels are much more relaxing, but also have a lot less fuh-ree-dum to them.
