This might be a famous Real Life picture, but I somehow doubt it's really an example, despite its writeup in the example section. The caption strongly suggests that the image and example don't represent the trope.

This is a pretty poor image

She's an example. As the description says, there are 2 key parts of the trope; mysterious, and waif.

She's mysterious - for a while, no one even knew who she was, not even the photographer.

She's a waif - a refugee driven from her home living in squalor.

More than that, the image shows both those things. She looks mysterious just from the expression on her face and the hood, and she looks like a waif based on her clothing.

I'm not saying we couldn't find a better picture, but the current one works well enough.

That is a very mediocre image.

No suggested replacement, though. The answer to the title question is "yes, a bit".

I think the image works well; she's become something of the poster-girl for refugees and the like. It took 17 years to track her down after the photograph on the page, which was first featured as a National Geographic front cover. She fits the "mysterious" part through her expresson (especially the eyes), in my mind, but I can see that she does look ordinary. The "waif" part is evidenced by her clothes.

I get that there may be some images that are morw waify, though. What are people's ideas – I can't think of any.

That was the amazing part. Things just keep going.
